Although people have joined one another to knock a ball around for ages, football or international soccer was formalized in England in 1863. Today, FIFA which stands for Federation Internationale de Football Association, governs the great game of football.

Soccer is not a complicated sport to understand, but in a game involving two contestant teams of eleven players there must be laws. Out on the pitch a match is presided over by a referee, whose job it is to make sure there is fair play, and that the rules are correctly considered. When they are not he has the authority to make various decisions, the most serious of which is ordering a player off the field, frequently due to violent or deliberately dangerous contact. The opposite side then has the benefit of eleven players versus ten, that often changes the result. Two other officials are known as assistant referees, who assist in deciding when a ball is out of play, when players commit fouls, and in other requirements.

The enigma that is football is a much more than a game, with wide commercial and social ramifications. Previously, it was gate receipts that were to the fore in generating the funds to finance the clubs, but more recently there has been something of an explosion, that has transformed the sport into a global leisure colossus. Vast sums of money are concerned in TV contracts, which has inspired the brisk growth in armchair viewing. Millions more supporters still attend football stadiums to support their favorite clubs. Nearly all sports have become big business, within which there is nothing bigger than international football.

Several sports, including soccer have achieved much in international relationships. For instance there are some teams, in the English Premier League, that have fielded teams wholly comprised of overseas nationals. Of greater significance to the vast majority of supporters, isn't so much the nationality of a player, but his ability. The more skillful a footballer turns out to be, the more desirable he is to major clubs. Thankfully tremendous players are continuing to appear from all parts of the world.

Not that long ago, boxing was one of the only sports, providing any hope of escape, from being impoverished. Since that time football has created similar opportunities, and although only a small number of contenders finish up as wealthy soccer players, they exceed those who become rich as pugilists. From South America to Africa, Europe, and beyond, youngsters from deprived countries come together to practice ball skills. Some will be discovered as being extraordinarily talented, and may be catapulted into rich standards of living, to become icons, in their own right.
