Exercise Can Improve How You Age

Health practitioners have long suspected that exercise has an effect on aging. And over years, many studies have had the effect of strengthening that suspicion.

A lot of the physiological changes that men and women experience as they age can be traced directly to a sedentary lifestyle. A body at rest for long periods of time tends to deteriorate. Anyone who has seen the effect of how extended periods of inactivity affects the muscles of a bedridden patient can attest to that. And, conversely, people in occupations that require a person to move continuously, such as a mail carrier, seem to stay in better physical shape as they age than those who have spent a lifetime in more sedentary jobs.

A perfect example of how exercise affects health is weight training. Weight training, among other things, strengthens the bones. The strength of our bones plays a great deal in the determination of our health as we age - especially among women.

One of the great fears of people as they age is fear of falling and breaking bones. This is because many elderly are never the same after experiencing a fall and breaking one or more bones.

Weak bones are more prone to breakage than strong ones. In addition, many falls, are directly related to weak bones not being able to carry the full weight of the person. Weight training not only helps to prevent bone loss. It also can strengthen already weakened bones - so even if the person does fall, he is less likely to break bones.

Lack of exercise also leads indirectly to health problems. People who don't exercise much tend to gain weight faster than those that do. Obesity, and even being overweight, has been linked to a number of disease that affect lifespan. For example, all things being equal, the odds of an obese person developing type 2 diabetes is at least twice that of someone of normal weight. Being overweight also has an effect on the joints causing them to wear out faster from having to carry around so much extra weight. And the problems feeds back on themselves. The more overweight we are the less we feel like exercising. The less we exercise, the more overweight we become.

For many, exercise is a chore. Probably one of the best ways to ensure that you get enough exercise as you age is to develop a hobby that you enjoy and that requires physical activity. Golf is a perfect example of a hobby that gets you out in the open air, gets you walking for a couple of miles, is fun, and is not too strenuous. For others, a passion might be ballroom dancing which many couples do well into their eighties. Gardening is another hobby that millions of people, especially homeowners, enjoy in the warmer months. If you expand your interests, you will find that there are an endless number of things that you can enjoy that will get you up and exercising.

The science is in and clearly shows that many of the diseases that afflict the elderly can either be prevented or delayed by the simple act of exercising more.
