A basic thimble is desirable when performing hand stitching such as hemming or basting. The end of your finger can become quite sore in a very short period of time without one. Thimbles are normally worn on the finger that is used to push the needle through the fabric. It may take you a few minutes to get used to a thimble, and there are many who sew who refuse to wear them. For most, however, they make the task much more pleasant.
Sewing needles can be purchased in packages that are all one size or that contain an assortment. You will select the smaller needles for delicate fabrics and intricate work. Standard needles require you to maneuver the thread through the eye, either by hand or with a needle threader. Self-threading needles have a tiny slit at the top of the eye, allowing you to slide the thread through. These types of needles can sometimes come undone if forced through a very thick, stubborn fabric such as folded denim.
A box of small spools of thread in assorted colors makes mending easier. If you need to replace a button or repair a hem, you can easily find the correct color of thread to make the repair. There is not enough thread on each roll for a major project, but they are very handy for a small fix.
Pin cushions come in a variety of sizes and styles. Those that stand alone can be found in shapes such as tomatoes or integrated into porcelain figures like a shoe. There are also pin cushions that are mounted on plastic bands so they can be worn on the wrist. The type chosen is a matter of personal preference.
Other sewing supplies you might wish to consider include a fabric pencil, for marking darts and stitch lines, and a cutting board. There are also temporary and permanent glues, hem guides, and fusible, iron-on fabrics. You may also want to keep a stock of snaps, hook and eye sets, and shirt buttons on hand.
