Surely we were not born to pack chickens into cages, with no room to move about? Afterwards shorten their beaks to stop them pecking one another, and fill them full of drugs, to try to prevent them from getting diseases, because of the foul conditions forced on the unfortunate creatures.

Vegetarians recognize that it is not just chickens, but many other animals that are subjected to the conditions of intensive farming techniques. Everyone should be grateful to the oft-criticized media, as they sometimes do draw notice to these issues, and highlight material that governments would much rather stifle.

Thankfully, there is a good deal of thought focussed on global warming, which is undoubtedly of significant concern, as much to vegetarians as anyone. Nevertheless, it is not always realized that animal waste is a substantial contributor. There are reports that US farm animals turn out 250,000 pounds of waste per second. That is twenty times as much as humans. The effluent is a gaseous substance, that adds to the methane dispersing into the atmosphere from both ends of these creatures. It is true that if more people became vegetarian, less animals would be required. It seems evident that there are environmental reasons, as well as health grounds for being a vegetarian
