Benign prostatic hyperplasia, or enlarged prostate, is a health condition that affects almost every man above the age 85 and close to 50% of men over 60 years old. This condition can be successfully treated in most cases, but if left untreated for a long time it can lead to serious complications.

The enlarge prostate symptoms may vary from person to person, but are most commonly associated with urination problems; this usually starts with waking up in the middle of the night with the need to urinate, but can be also manifested as weak urination. If the treatment starts at an early stage, the benign prostatic hyperplasia can be stopped and the prostate can get back to its normal size. The most commonly prescribed medications are the alpha blockers and the 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors; these two groups work differently and while the alpha blockers relax the muscles of the prostate and the bladder neck, the 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors suppress the production of Dihydrotestosterone, the hormone that leads to prostate enlargement.

Finasteride, which is one of the very effective 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, was approved by the U.S. Food And Drug Administration in 1992 for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia under the brand name Proscar. It is sold under various brand names, such as Proscar, Propecia, Fincover, generic Proscar and Finax. The Finasteride 1mg and Finasteride 5mg are the two doses commonly sold. The packages are of 60, 90, 180 or 240 tablets.

Even though extremely effective, the Finasteride does not cure enlarged prostate, still it successfully manages the condition and for most men this means that once they get on the pill, they have to stay on it for the rest of their lives. Anyway, its effect is usually noticeable within a few months. The prostate shrinks back to normal size and all the urination problems disappear as well. As with other synthetic drugs, Finasteride can cause unwanted side effects and is not recommended for men suffering from liver diseases, kidney infection or prostate cancer. However, Finasteride works really well for most patients, regardless of their age and the unwanted effects are either mild or rare.

Although benign prostatic hyperplasia isn't a life-threatening disorder, this condition should be treated as soon as possible. If you experience urination problemsg or any other symptoms described in this review, you should pay a visit to your doctor and ask him for advice. Once you have been prescribed a Finasteride treatment, you should take your pills every day for as long as prescribed; in many cases the effect is not visible right away, but patients report improvement a few months later. Even though taking Finasteride for the rest of your life sounds like something you wouldn't want to do, right now this is the best option and the only way to avoid surgery and reverse the condition.
