Is your internet connection too slow for you? Are your downloads taking too long? There are a few tools and tricks you can use to speed things up. While the best solution may be to get a faster ISP, you might not want to go that far for now. So let's see what can get you faster browsing.

Caching with Transparent Proxy Server

If there's a website you visit often and you notice it loads fast, it's because your browser has been caching it. Caching means storing a web page for quick retrieval when it is requested again by the user. Now your browser caches only the pages that you've already visited in the past. Wouldn't you get faster browsing if you use a server that caches web pages frequented by other clients on that same server?

That's what a transparent proxy does. A proxy is like a filter or screen between your computer and the website you want to surf. You make your request to the proxy, and it relays that request to the website. The website then gives the info (a webpage, a file, etc.) to the proxy, and the proxy forwards it to you. It is a transparent proxy if it doesn't hide your original IP address (your computer's public ID number online), in which case you can't surf anonymously with it. But it gets faster browsing for you if other people using the same transparent proxy have requested the same pages you need. For example, if you want to view the footage of the sleepwalking dog on Yahoo Videos, the proxy will load it instantly for you if others on the server had requested for it already.

Note that if you're going to use a transparent proxy, you're trusting the server owner with your data. Don't access your mail accounts, bank accounts, or make financial transactions without a secure connection.

Downloading with Download Accelerators

If you like to get big files off the internet, there are programs that can increase your download speeds. These download accelerators work by either retrieving several pieces of the same file at the same time, or by testing different file sources and using the fastest one. Tests have found that they do better with larger files than small ones; in either case the results aren't spectacular. But download programs are also useful for managing/organizing your files and for resuming broken transfers.

Back to Basics Browsing

If a transparent proxy and download accelerator aren't enough, you can adjust your browser settings. Go to Internet Explorer's Internet Options Advanced and turn off Show pictures. You can also turn off ActiveX and other scripts. The less pictures, scripts, banners, etc. that you allow to run, the faster pages load. Once a page has loaded, you can right-click on an image and select show picture. This is useful if you need only the text content.
