Ask Joan Bosscawen, a franchisee for the largest hospitality search firm in The U.S., how business has been going for the last six months and you'll get a smile from ear to ear. "Business is just booming and we're all happy to hear and feel the excitement that our clients are hiring. The momentum has certainly shifted in favor of the candidate because our clients are needing experienced hospitality managers right away", said Bosscawen.
So why has the employment environment changed so drastically over the last 180 days. One theory is that for the last eighteen months companies have been scaling back on their human capitol to such a degree that restaurants and hotels are running on skeleton management teams. While management downsizing was an essential survival tactic adopted by many major companies within the hospitality industry, those companies, in fear of burning out their management staff, understand the need to "beef up" their management workforce.
"High quality hospitality managers are still very much employed but open to explore new opportunities. Unfortunately these highly sought after managers are apprehensive in putting their name out in public in fears of losing their job", commented Robert Krzak, President of Gecko Hospitality. "Over sixty five percent of the restaurant and hospitality managers we've placed over the past six months have come from organic networking and not the job boards. 'Fears of losing their job' was high on list of the reason given why highly qualified managers are not placing their resumes online", said Krzak.
Another theory is the innovating marketing and advertising programs. Adopted by many restaurant and hotel companies since the economic downturn, these programs are said to be the fuel that has driven increased guest counts.
"Our bottom line profits are not flattering and we're not impressing our shareholders but we're filing seats, keeping our employees working and keeping our name out in the public. If we can continue to execute our food and service and keep our guests happy during this period, they'll remember us when times are good," commented one casual theme Regional Manager in the Southeast.
However, as the economy strives to return to a sense of normality for many Americans, the fact remains that management jobs within the hospitality and restaurant industry continue to rise. And as the demand continues to outweigh the current supply, management candidates within the hospitality sector will be afforded the luxury in seeing what has been but a distant memory in years past; MORE MONEY!
