Emergency Plumbing - What Is It?

The question of what constitutes emergency plumbing comes up more than many people would think. It's also arising more in recent times than has been the case in the past. There are many factors behind this, but the one cause that is definitely the biggest contributor is the recent changes in the way that plumbers get paid.

Just a few generations ago, repair plumbers were mostly individuals who worked for themselves with a assistant, or an apprentice. “Plumbing companies” mostly worked on new construction projects and huge commercial retrofits. It was quickly discovered, however, that there was money to be made from service and repair plumbing, and the first “emergency plumbing repair” company was born.

Now, early on, the majority of those companies paid their workers by the hour. Throughout this time, an emergency repair meant that the client was experiencing an enormous leak, was completely without water, or had all of their drains backing up and flooding their house. The plumbers’ task was to alleviate this crisis by going to the customer’s home and doing whatever was needed to fix the problem. Seeing as these plumbers were very busy and paid by the hour, there was no need to do anything more than address the immediate need.

As time went on, and competition among plumbing service companies grew to become more fierce, companies started to employ additional approaches for making money. The reasoning here was that with a lesser amount of service calls, the plumbers would need to make more money with each call. In an effort to promote this, many companies started paying their plumbers by commission. The more the technician sold the job for, the more money they would personally earn. These plumbers started to realize that there was only so much money they could charge for a simple repair, so they began to try to find more work to perform at every house they visited.

This was not a new concept. We had previously seen this approach from mechanics along with other tradesmen. “If you don’t fix your brakes immediately, they're going to go out while you're on the freeway and you could get into an accident” is not an uncommon mantra. Believe it or not, this system applies well to plumbing service. A rusted pipe that has a couple of years of life left in it might easily develop into a plumbing emergency in the hands of a skilled salesman.

Now, I'm not saying that this rusted pipe shouldn't be fixed. I am merely saying that you ought to be wary of plumbers that classify everything they spot as an emergency. It is probably best if you do repair as much as possible while you have the plumber at your home. It is generally the smart way to go. Just make sure that you are doing it because the plumber has given you good information – not because he frightened you with talk of impending doom.
