Eight Types of Jacket

Having read a range of definitions and descriptions of 'jacket' the word itself, I came to the conclusion that the term 'jacket' can be thought of like this: A jacket is a clothing garment designed for the upper half of the body or a man or woman. Most jackets drop to the wearer's waist line or hips and has sleeves. A jacket is differentiated from a coat by its length, although some jacket styles could be mistaken for a coat.

Here are two ways to categorise jackets:

- Trend jackets

- Jackets that are for safety

Stylish Jackets

Blazers

The blazer looks like a suit jacket. By and large blazers have got metal front and cuff buttons and a breast pocket. As a consequence it is commonly worn as smart casual wear. In style and cut the boating jacket and sporting jacket are similar to the blazer. Even so the blazer is inclined to be of a more subdued color, 'navy' for example is a popular blazer color, as is black. Blazers are very often used as the foundation of a uniform, e.g. for school kids and airline stewards or as part of the attire for a club.

The Leather Jacket

The leather jacket is very widely recognized simultaneously with regard to the image of its style and also for the material it is produced from. Leather jackets started to be significantly fashionable immediately following World War Two: consumers liked the form of the 'bomber jacket', so called due to the fact it was worn by bomber pilots. In the beginning the leather jacket was linked with rebellion and worn by actors like James Dean and Marlon Brando. Leather jackets remain synonymous with rebellious sub-cultures such as rock stars and bikers but they are unquestionably part of the mainstream fashion world. A modern example of this jacket type is the Superdry mens leather jacket.

Denim Jackets

The word 'denim' derives from the terms 'serge de Nimes'. 'Serge' is a cloth and was initially harvested in the Nimes region of France. So 'serge de nimes' evolved into 'denim'. Denim had a similar fashion route to leather: Initially denim was functional, being used by those who worked in difficult environments. Then it became incorporated into fashion lines and became very popular in the 1960s and 1970s.

Many widely known design labels create jackets, for example Wrangler, Nike, G Star and Lacoste. G Star jackets are a relative newcomer compared with the other more established players. However the Lacoste jackets is much better known.

Protective Jackets

The Donkey Jacket

From Wikipedia: "A Donkey jacket is a short buttoned coat, typically made of unlined black or dark blue woolen material; originally worn as a work jacket in the United Kingdom. It is derived from the wool sack coat worn by workers in the 19th century, and the OED references the term as first used in 1929: "one with leather shoulders and back".

Flak Jacket

Flak jackets are designed to offer security to the individual from offensive items including knife blades, bullets and shrapnel (also known as 'flak'). The term 'flack jacket' is interchangeable with 'bullet proof vest' as worn by armed forces and the police in almost all countries, that are lined with robust defensive material like for example steel or titanium.

The Chef Jacket

The white chef jacket is totally identifiable. It serves a defensive purpose by safeguarding the chef from burning liquids and grease. Also, it is functional - the chef can immediately turn the jacket inside-out to hide food staining.

Miscellaneous Jackets

An example of a jacket which does not readily conform to the above categories is the Eisenhower Jacket, or 'Ike jacket'. Its blouson design and style was designed to create a very strong statement in order to individualize its wearer.
