There are numerous affiliates in the online world. I will assume that you have been contemplating signing up as affiliate but what exactly do you have to do? What steps do you have to take just to get things started? In this article I will document the steps that I have taken to sign up as an affiliate. Since I am fairly new this writing on this site, I am going to choose to keep my affiliate as a generic name. Really, does it matter, there seems to be so many choices out there. Let's continue with the steps I plan to take.

Step One

Using Google to find the website is always a good way to go about things. There always seems to be more information. I entered the following in my Google search bar; mygenericaffiliate.com, affiliate and the number one choice came up in Google as their name plus a few extra tidbits. (Sign Up, Login, and join now)

Step Two

The welcome screen is pretty efficient with my affiliate choice so they are giving me two options. Either sign up for free or view products. For our purposes "Sign Up For Free" makes the most sense.

Step Three

The first screen is the warning screen. The first warning screen I come to breaks things down into 3 steps that I will need to agree to. First, I must accept the license agreement. Second, I must enter account information for either personal or company. Third, I must enter payment information, which is where presumably I will receive sales commission. OK, I'm ready...hit the continue button

Step Four

OK, here's my first scare. The next screen is the Terms and Conditions page, which we were expecting. What I cannot figure out is a small sentence that prompts me that if I want to use their affiliate program for commercial purposes I should either call or email them. Now, I'm no Donald Trump, but what is the definition of "Commercial Purposes". If I owned a Taco Stand and wanted to be an affiliate to promote homemade corn tortillas is that a commercial operation? Not sure.. For my purposes, I think I am Ok with just agreeing to the terms. (Although that always scares me, I always get this visual of myself sitting on a witness stand with an attorney shouting, "So when you clicked the I agree to the above legal agreement and hit "I agree" you didn't remember what you were agreeing to? Is that it??) Whew OK I'm back I'll just hit I agree.

Step Five

What stands before me now is the blank white information box wall of torture. Here I am at the information page, this is going to be a while folks. The information looks pretty basic so I guess I will get started.

Step Six

Along with the information was a method to allow me to fill out a W9 Tax form that was required by them to pay me. I filled it out. They then provided me with instructions on how to send it in. All this is pretty straightforward stuff.

Step Seven

In this step, it was necessary to provide my bank information. They gave me the option to do this later but decided to seize the moment. This went fairly painlessly.

Step Eight

The next step was a review of the products that you could offer. Included in this step was a submission to the creator of the product that I was interested in giving them the option to "allow" or "deny" me as a representative of the product. In my case, I had a conversation with the owner/creator the other day who encouraged me to sign up for this so I felt pretty good about getting accepted.

This pretty much wraps up the preliminaries and I think this should serve those looking to find out what is involved in signing up, a good insight into what is required. There are some final thoughts on what else will be needed to complete our relationship. I have to have a link that let's the affiliate know when I send a customer from my website to theirs. This will have to wait until the creator of the product has approved me. At that point, I expect that information to be made available to me. I also have to send in the tax form.
