Being depressed constitute to a feeling of loneliness, sadness or melancholy. Since our bodies cannot make omega-3s on their own, we can only obtain them from the food we eat. Omega-3s are found to be more effective and better than antidepressants. They can be found in sardines, salmons, flaxseeds and anchovies. Walnuts are also excellent sources of omega-3 essential fatty acids.

Folic acid, also called folate, is a B vitamin that is not often present or is less present in people who are depressed. This can be found in vegetables, fruits, fortified grains and beans. Magnesium can also prevent and cure depression. Good sources of this are legumes, whole grains, nuts and green vegetables. Magnesium is needed for serotonin (neurotransmitter that regulates mood) production.

Watch your diet. Reduce intake of sweets, caffeine and alcohol. Alcohol and caffeine both dampen the mood. Alcohol relaxes the body for a while and caffeine boosts energy, but these effects do not last long. They are short-lived.

Stress should also be avoided. This is since stress can obviously deplete magnesium in the body and result to lack of serotonin. One of the best natural remedies for depression is loving oneself, having self-trust and learning self-worth. Keep a positive mindset. After all, we struggle everyday in life to be happy. It is a state of mind that every one deserves. During the times you start feeling depressed, start thinking happy thoughts and go from there.
