The history of Majorca is a fascinating one, with a fascinating range of Roman, Byzantine and Moorish artifacts across the island. Inhabited since the Palaeolithic period, Majorca's strategic importance throughout history can be found in antiquities across the island, and is noted by a range of turbulent and sometimes bloody conflicts. Yet with each invasion new styles, farming methods and cultures were introduced, making it the truly vibrant and diverse island it is today. Part of Spain, yet maintaining its own distinct Balearic identity, Majorca's appeal as a tourist destination of style and luxury is reflected in its increasing allure to the environmentally conscious market looking for low-impact Majorca holidays that literally won't cost the earth.

Rural Majorca is a world apart from the hustle and bustle of the towns. From nature parks, to mountain ranges and pine forests, Majorca's countryside is diverse and varied. Sleepy ochre villages and wide-open farmland combine to present a truly rustic charm and appeal that extends to holidaymakers in search of a genuine eco-holiday. What is superb about rural Majorca is how well suited it is to cycling and walking. Both are ways of enjoying the island while keeping emissions minimal, and there is no better way to explore the contrasts of the Majorcan landscape than the laid back pace of a bicycle.

Majorca now has a modern and efficient network of roads but cyclists will appreciate the well maintained roads and walkers can enjoy the island's two marked "Grand Routes". For dramatic coastal and mountain walking, the Validemossa area and Deia, with its specialist shops and friendly atmosphere, offers plenty of sights to see and things to do, whether on foot or on bicycle. Deia has been on the tourist map for centuries, firstly attracting writers and composers, with this historic coastal village also featuring – like most along Majorca's splendid coastline – some excellent places to eat locally sourced produce.

The Palma to Soller railway features an old, yet well maintained and elegantly styled electric train. Palma is Majorca's main city, and while getting about here on a very efficient public transport offers plenty of culture and arts to discover, the train ride to the town of Soller is another eco-friendly way to experience Majorca's countryside and mountain scenery. Arriving in Soller, visitors usually head to the shops and boutiques around the Placa Constitucio, the bustling and lively town square. For history, churches and great local Majorcan food, many villages on Majorca hold art and craft events as well as traditional festivals.

The great thing about Majorca is that its countryside and natural environment can be enjoyed throughout the year, and with mild winters walking and cycling holidays are perfect outside of the traditional season. Across the Majorcan coastline are some great beaches that are also enjoyable throughout the year, lined with luxury Majorca villas providing the very best in eco-friendly accommodation. For water sports enthusiasts, kitesurfing and kayaking are two great ways to enjoy the coast, as well as diving and snorkelling being favourites. For experts and beginners, hire shops and schools offer plenty of choices, so whatever water sport you are interested in, there is usually something for everyone.

Villas in Majorca are increasingly focused on a green, environmentally friendly design; yet do not compromise on style and luxury. Situated in clean, family friendly resorts, accommodation can be arranged in an area from which you want to explore, while getting to the island is easy, with regular flights to and from the UK.
