We are all aware of the dangers of global warming. Rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere are believed to be a major cause of global warming as the ozone layer is depleted.

The everyday choices we make about the items we buy, the way we run our homes and the way we travel can make a big difference to the amount of carbon fuels we as individuals use. Some of our choices affect the amount of carbon fuels that are used by others, for example when we buy foods that have to flown around the world instead of locally sourced produce.

The term carbon footprint refers to the amount of carbon dioxide that your lifestyle generates. There are now a number of products on the market which claim to be carbon neutral, including believe it or not, car insurance.

Other than walking, sailing and cycling, virtually every available means of transport relies on fossil fuels. Even the production of a bicycle is not possible without electricity, and materials still need to be transported to and from the bicycle factory and shops.

For the green amongst us, it may be impossible to completely do without a car, particularly for those who have a disability or who live in an isolated location.

It is not possible to avoid using fossil fuels in every circumstance, but by offsetting any negative impacts by planting trees which absorb carbon dioxide for example, the idea is that your carbon emissions can be cancelled out.

If you are concerned about your carbon footprint, avoid unnecessary car journeys and use public transport if possible. Do not fly if you can take a train or bus instead. Buy local produce where possible, you will not only help your local economy but could also help the environment.

By driving carefully, accelerating slowly and braking gently, it is also possible to reduce your fuel consumption and therefore reducing your carbon dioxide emissions. This will also save you money on petrol and make your car last longer.

Carbon neutral car insurance is available, where the carbon you emit by driving is offset by projects that your insurance companies pay for, for example planting trees, or investing in sustainable energy projects such as wave or wind power.
