As much as you can, check the forums, the Better Business Bureau, Trading Standards or other consumer/trade organisations to see how long they’ve been in business, their track record for fixing problems and dealing with complaints. Unfortunately people have lost their domains because the registrar went out of business and you don’t really want to deal with people who refuse to be helpful. The reality today is that anyone can become a domain registrar if they get the paperwork right.

Some companies buy up domain names, build websites and sell them as a package with the domain name attached. Often these are a great way to get a website and domain up and running with some content already in place. You can literally get it all - the domain name, content, the theme with its associated look and feel - from a one-stop shop. There are many other ways in which website designers work, so ask friends and colleagues to recommend someone or look on the Internet for someone who will deal with the whole process in a way that suits you.

However you do it, think of the best name for what you do - your domain - buy it or simply register it for a year or two, find a website designer/producer and establish your online presence. There simply aren’t any longer good enough reasons for delaying getting your business online.
