When talking about drug abuse and addiction, many people think of them as being one and the same, but the truth is that there is a difference betwen addiction to drugs and the abuse of drugs. Dependency does begin with drug abuse, but addiction is much more than a lot of drug use.

Drug abuse is basically the repeated or uncontrolled use of controlled substances. You could also define it as misusing a chemical substance habitually. Using drugs for something other than their designated purpose is what this definition includes. In fact, drug abuse has a range of definitions, but all suggest disapproval at the use or overuse of a drug for non-therapeutic reasons.

On the other hand drug addiction happens when a persons body becomes addicted to having that chemical in their system and when they don't have it they can suffer from withdrawls that cause physical and real adverse symptoms to the person addicted. Drugs interfere with the normal performance of the brain making it altered to the point that functioning without the drug is virtually unthinkable.

When a person is addicted to drugs, they continue to use the drug despite adverse health reactions and possible damage to their bodies. They disregard their personal health in favor of continuing the feeling that they get when they are on their drug of choice. Quitting for these people just isn't as simple as "just say no". This is a time when a person's drug abuse becomes an addiction and it must be addressed and dealt with.

Realizing the implications of drug use and addiction can help keep people on track and away from coming to the point of addiction in their habit. It's a lot easier to start looking for options for treatment when you know what it is you're dealing with.

Whether you or a loved one is abusing drugs or are addicted to drugs, intervention needs to be sought-after as soon as possible to help avoid severe health implications. Drug intervention can deeply affect both the user and society. Healing the addicts in our society improves social and psychological performance and makes for a more nonviolent community and world.

Drug abuse is overall the number one cause of deaths and illness that are preventable in the US. No matter what drug you are talking about, be it any narcotic or mind altering drug, these things can cause irreparable harm to the body. Use of these things is preventable and teaching individuals is the first step in that.

The problem of drug abuse and addiction are true blight on our society. Both have been around for years and years, but if we take the time to recognize not only the difference between the two, but also the signs and signals that indicate drug use, we can begin to heal ourselves both as individual people and as a society.
