1st study the dimensions of your fingers. View your fingers with the palm turned away. You'll notice that the fingers are approximately one-half the length of the complete hand. Every finger is sectioned into three parts of dissimilar lengths. The topmost piece (including the nail) is about two-thirds of the midsection, and the center part is about two-thirds of the bottom part (which gives way to the knuckles).

Here for a little bit magic! Turn your hand all over so you see it from the palm. The dimensions of the fingers have changed now clearly! The fingers now look much shorter. If you measure them you will see they are a great deal less than half the length of the hand. The cause: the skin between the digits seems as extension of the palm.

Also note that the three parts of the fingers now are all of nearly equal length. When drafting hands it's very important to keep in mind this so you do not make the mistake of drafting the same fingers disregarding of which way you observe them.

The thumb is a completely different thing, so do not draft it as yet another digit. It only has two joints, not three, points in a different direction and has a completely different form so study it with care. You should also note how it bends lightly when fully stretched out.

Drawing other hand postures

The following basic hand postures you should practice to draw is the fist. Note that the knuckle joints do not wind up in a unbent line and that the fore finger and often the middle finger stick out much more than the other digits.

Once you have perfected drawing relaxed hands and clenched fists, start drafting hands that point somewhere or grab something. Finally you can also try drawing hands that are in motion.

Exercise these postures time and again employing your own hand as a model. In just few weeks you will note a huge improvement in your abilities and can commence adding additional hand postures to your repertory.
