I just read an article containing some really useful information for people with bladder infections like peeing before and after sex. But some of the advice in that article isn't good if the person with frequent bladder infections also suffers from overactive bladder or weak bladder.
1. Here's one of the recommendations in the article I disagree with: "Excuse yourself as soon as you feel the urge", says the physician quoted in the article. Well, I have to take issue with this because going as soon as you feel the urge to "go" makes people much more likely to develop "overactive bladder". In that case, you trade one problem for the other.
People with a weak bladder are already going to the bathroom too often. Going to the bathroom as soon as you feel urge trains the weak bladder to empty too early.
A much better solution to help prevent bladder infections is to put yourself on a timed schedule for toileting. That way you can keep the bladder cleared of urine and you don't develop the toileting habits of that make a weak bladder worse.
Another useful technique to avoid bladder infections is to use "double voiding". When using this technique, you stand up at the toilet once you've completed your urinating, wait for 20 seconds or so, and then sit down and empty again. This helps rid the bladder of the residual urine which can contain bacteria that continue to multiply and cause problems if the bladder isn't emptied well.
2. The second suggestion to prevent bladder infections the article made that I have to take issue with is this: It's also bad practice for many people with overactive bladder to consume cranberry juice because the acidity can make their problems of frequency and urgency a lot worse.
The acidity of cranberry juice and many other fruit juices irritates the bladder, creating severe problems for a lot of people. In fact, many people I've worked with who had overactive bladder completely resolved their problems with simple dietary changes.
Another problem for people with overactive bladder and bladder infections is fluid intake. Overactive bladder causes a person to feel like they have to go to the bathroom a lot more frequently than normal. Sometimes overactive bladder is so bad that the person has to urinate every 15 or 20 minutes.
A common practice is to cut down on fluid intake in order to try to reduce the number of toiletings a person has to do in a day or night. Unfortunately, this can create the perfect
environment for a bladder infection.
People with overactive bladder are best served by learning some bladder training tricks like the ones presented by BladderFitness.com.
