One of the fastest growing industries in the Western world is that of interior design. You only have to flick through the TV channels, or browse any magazine stall, to see how many options there are for people who are interested in interior design.
And with such a wide selection of ways of learning about interior design comes a wide selection of ideas and inspirations. Whole concepts and styles that can be literally picked out of the pages of a magazine and implemented into your home.
Living
It is important to remember, however, a big difference between these concept styles and your implementation of them. Whilst they make look attractive, stylish and desirable many lack one important factor – they are designed to look good on the page or on the screen, they are not created to be lived in.
Some claim to be, and some will be, but many – especially those clean cut, minimalist styles, are not. Look at the chairs and sofas... how comfortable do they look? Can you imagine sitting there for a few hours, watching TV? Can they survive dinner parties and house guests?
Which is why when you are looking at the design of your rooms you need to be different from these shows and magazines. You need to not just consider how something will look but also how it will feel. How you will interact with it in your day to day life.
Our home is where we want to feel comfortable, where we want to relax, to unwind. To do that we need to not be feeling uncomfortable, we not to be stressing about someone dropping some wine, or someone traipsing in some mud. We need a place we can live, breathe and enjoy ourselves.
In short we need a home, not a style. Don't forget to think about home comforts when you are designing your rooms. They matter more than you think.
