Apart from the domain name, websites are designated by an IP address. An IP address is a unique identifier used by either humans or computers to assign the location of a website or web server. The problem with an IP address is that it is a series of four numbers, so it can be almost impossible to remember all the important ones. Domain names were created to solve this problem. Domain names help humans find a website with words and phrases they can understand and remember.

Domain names are made of several sections. The URL is the first part, which stands for Uniform Resource Locator. The URL enables your browser to know the destination, or what the domain name is going to 'point to'. Most of the time, the URL is the part 'http,' which tells the browser to expect to display a document written in hypertext. Most web pages you view are written in hypertext language. Once in a while, you may see the URL written 'ftp'. This stands for File Transfer Protocol. This URL is used when your browser is downloading or maybe uploading files.

'www' is usually the next part of the domain name, and this stands for "World Wide Web." This tells you and your browser that the site or page your viewing is located on the Internet. Next comes the unique combination of letters, numbers, or phrases which makes the actual domain name. Three keys for a good domain name are: Is it short as possible? Is it easy to remember? Is it search engine friendly or compatible? A main preoccupation of webmasters is choosing domain names that are not so much creative as they are inclusive of the main keyword or keyword phrase. Even more important is that they choose a domain name that contains a keyword which is searched on frequently.

The last part of any domain name is called the extension. The extension can often, but not always, tell the viewer a bit more about the website. The .com extension was originally intended for only commercial sites, and it remains the most common. Now, it is the default extension for any plain website. Now, most Internet users are conditioned to expect the .com before they consider other ones, like .org, .biz or .net. Domain names with other extensions are sometimes on popular sites, like Wikipedia.org.

Another type of domain name extension is intended to designate the country of origin. The letters .de shows the website is in Germany, and the letters .jp show the website is in Japan. A variation of national extensions is that of states. California websites are shown by .ca, and Florida websites are shown by .fl.

Persons interested in buying a domain name can either buy them from their ISP, hosting company, or a separate domain name service. Prices for domains vary widely, and can range from $1 to $35.
