Studies have looked at the relationship between high-fiber diets and various diseases, including colon cancer, coronary heart disease and diabetes. And the proven benefits of a high-fiber diet include prevention and cure of constipation, hemorrhoids and diverticulosis. Also, certain sorts of fiber help decrease cholesterol levels.

Dietary fiber comes from the section of plants that is not digested by means of enzymes in the intestinal tract. Part of it, on the other hand, can be metabolized by microbes in the lower intestines. Different sorts of plants have varying amounts and types of fiber, including pectin, gum, mucilage, cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin.

Pectin and gum are water-soluble fibers found inside plant cells. They slow the passage of food in the bowels although do nothing to increase fecal volume. Beans, oat bran, fruit and vegetables contain soluble fiber.

In contrast, fibers in cell walls are water insoluble. These include cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Such fibers increase fecal volume and speed up the passage of food through the digestive tract.

Wheat bran and whole grains hold the most insoluble fiber, but greens and beans also are great sources.Occasionally there is uncertainty as to the difference between crude fiber and dietary fiber. Both are determined by a laboratory investigation, but crude fiber is just one-seventh to one-half of the sum of dietary fiber.

Insoluble fiber binds water, making stools softer and bulkier. Thus, fiber, particularly that originating in whole grain products, is beneficial in the treatment and prevention of constipation, hemorrhoids and diverticulosis.

Diverticula are pouches of the intestinal wall that can become inflamed and painful. It is now known that a high-fiber diet gives healthier results once the swelling has been reduced.

Some types of fiber, though, happen to have a better result than others. The fiber originating in rolled oats is more effective in reducing blood cholesterol amounts than the fiber originating in wheat. Pectin has a similar effect in that it, too, can lower the quantity of cholesterol in the blood.

High-fiber diets may be useful for people who want to get rid of weight. Fiber itself has no calories, yet provides a "full" feeling because of its water- absorbing ability. For instance, an apple is more satisfying than a half glass of apple fruit juice that has approximately the equivalent calories.

Foodstuffs high in fiber often require more chewing, so a person is unable to scoff a huge amount of calories in a small amount of time. Dietary fiber is found only in plant foods: fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains. Meat, milk and eggs do not contain fiber.

The kind of food can or can not influence its fiber content. Canned and frozen fruits and vegetables hold just as much fiber as raw ones. Some sorts of processing, nevertheless, may reduce fiber content. Drying and crushing, for instance, wipe out the water-containing behavior of fiber.

The removal of seeds, peels or hulls also reduces fiber content. Whole tomatoes boast more fiber than skinned tomatoes, which have more than tomato juice. Also, whole wheat bread has more fiber than white bread.

Fiber supplements can be bought in a number of forms from bran tablets to purified cellulose. A lot of laxatives sold as stool softeners in point of fact are fiber supplements. Fiber's function in the diet is still being checked.

It appears that the many types of fiber have distinctive roles in the body. For these reasons, keep away from fiber supplements. In its place, enjoy a selection of fiber-rich foods.

This is the best means to obtain the maximum benefits from each kind of fiber present in foodstuffs, and acquire required nutrients.
