A windmill is an equipment which utilizes the energy from the wind to make other forms of practical energy like electricity. They are also commonly known as wind turbines particularly when referring to the kinds that are used to create electricity. When it comes to producing power, windmills are seen as greatly dependable and efficient. A windmill is made up of a set of blades that are connected to a central axis that is designed to revolve when it comes in contact with wind.

Windmills transpired from the need for creative and environmentally friendly technique of exploiting energy. They have been in around since around the fifth century AD where they were being created in Persia. The first types were used as grinding mills but they have advanced enormously over the years. The uses of windmills and the variety of styles continue to transform along with time and technology. This is apparent when you look at how they were controlled compared to how they are controlled these days. They once required the attention of someone constantly in order for them to operate successfully. Nowadays, windmills are controlled by computers.

The use of windmills has spread to various countries as it is cheap and it generates energy without releasing green house gases. Windmills use free energy to create another kind of energy and that has resulted in the use of windmills to become customary and common. They are also quite eye-catching and in some countries they are seen as an attraction. In Holland and Spain for example, windmills make up a part of their attraction. They have a wide variety of uses, some of which are:

1.Water pumping
2.Grain grinding
3.Generating electricity

The total power that is produced by a windmill is dependent on certain aspects. First of all, its size is a major factor. The larger the blades are and the more blades included on the axis causes the creation of more energy. Secondly, its position or location. Windmills work well in flat areas and they have to be used where there is wind to drive the sails. Lastly, the amount of windmills that are used to produce power is important. The more windmills used, the more power will be created. On the other hand, one windmill can produce a substantial amount of energy.

A wind mill is comprised of several components so as to effectively generate energy. There are sails which are responsible for the majority of the work. These blades are attached to a body consisting of a very long tower. The height of the tower is necessary to the overall functioning of the as it elevates the sails at higher elevation for increased access to wind. It is very important that a windmill is mounted on a very strong and sturdy pole or tower as the stronger and higher they are, the better they operate. Windmills are defined according to the kind of axis that they have. The most common type is the horizontal axis which has three blades. The next kind is those that have a vertical axis looking like an egg beater. This version has a benefit of functioning efficiently even when it is not facing the wind.

How a windmill operates is simple. The blades are very essential in the production of energy since they do most of the work. The blades involuntarily revolve when they come into contact with wind. This movement that is produced in sequence generates energy which is then passed from the sails through the shaft and then to the generator. When it reaches the generator, it changes the energy into electricity which has a benefit over other techniques of electricity generation since it is environmentally friendly.
