Other major problem is periodontal gum disease that attacks the soft tissues and bone that surround and support your teeth. While it can happen to anyone, it has been a major problem for adults who lose their teeth because of it. Gum disease is expected to be a problem for about three fourths of the adult population. Taking x rays and probing around the tooth are among the different examination methods dentist use to spot periodontal gum disease.

Bleeding gums while brushing your teeth are among the warning signs. Gums pulled away from the teeth, or swollen or red in appearance. Any sign of infection that may show up between your teeth and gums when you press your gums. Periodontal gum disease is also indicated by changing positions of the teeth, changes in the fitting of dentures, and loose teeth.
