The ultimate aim for the majority of website operators is to get a flow of free traffic and that means getting your website displayed on the first page of the natural search results for the major search engines, including the big three of Google, Yahoo and MSN.

A few years ago that was not too herd even in competitive markets but today it has become much harder as the Internet has grown dramatically and the search engines are now increasingly sophisticated at assessing websites and determining just which websites ought to be given prominence in their listings.

SEO is a complicated business nowadays and entire books have been written on the subject. One thing, however, that virtually all of the experts agree upon is the importance of steadily and slowly building links to your website and one of the most effective ways to do this is by writing articles and then submitting these to a variety of article directories. However, there is a correct way and a wrong way of doing this.

Your starting point is to write a series of articles on a variety of topics related to your website, with every article ending with a resource box that provides anchor text links back to your website. In this brief article we are going to assume that you are familiar with the ins and outs of article writing and do not intend to look at this particular subject. Our attention here is focused upon how to go about submitting your articles to the article directories.

There are a variety of opinions here and, as with most things in the world of SEO, you would be well advised to try out various different approaches and to carefully document what you do and the results you get. Once you have gathered enough data you will discover that it is a fairly simple matter to see just what works and what does not. An alternative is simply to listen to what others have to say on the subject although the problem here is that there is a great deal of misinformation floating around either from those who have little if any real experience and are simply trying to sell you something or from people who would deliberately mislead you because they see you as a possible competitor.

Your first route is to submit your articles by hand. With literally hundreds of article directory sites to choose from this is not a workable route, unless you restrict yourself to submitting only to the major, established and highly trafficked article directories. This is certainly possible and indeed there are many people who believe that this is the best route as they argue that the vast majority of article directory sites have little standing in the eyes of the search engines and so few visitors that they will attract little traffic to your articles and not do much to get your articles picked up and distributed by other webmasters.

Your second route is to submit your articles to a wide range of article directories which means either using a submission service or some type of article submission software.

There are various submission services available, but only a small number will provide you with a good service and give you the confidence that your articles will be submitted to a specified list of sites within a reasonable period of time. The main drawback to these services is that they require you to commit yourself to a monthly or annual payment and they are often extremely expensive.

TurningWhen it comes to article submission software, there are once again a variety of choices open to you from the very expensive to the extremely reasonable. If you feel that this is a route that appeals to you then you need to check out various options and should look carefully at just what each product can and cannot do. For example, does the software semi-automate or fully automate the process? How many article directory sites can you submit to? Can you add your own article directories to the submission process? Are you provided with a submission record so that you can see easily just how successful every article submission has been?

One final consideration is whether you ought to submit the same article to the article directories, or ought to create a series of 'unique' articles from your original article so that every directory gets a different version of your article? A lot of people will tell you that it does not matter and that the present debate about duplicate content is considerably overblown. Others however will tell you that, while it might not appear to be important in the short term, in the longer term the search engines will discount a lot of your article links as they find that they are from identical articles. Once again the secret here is to test for yourself and see just what results you get.

If you do decide that creating unique articles is the best way to go then you should investigate the wide range of article rewriting software available. Again take the time to look at each program carefully. Most programs are very fast and simple to use, but also produce absolute rubbish! There are however a few programs that, despite the fact that they take a little more work on your part, produce some very good results. There are also some programs that will not simply create unique articles but also output them ready for import into some of the article submission programs.

Submitting articles does work in terms of building links to your website and will certainly bring you free search engine traffic. However, you do need to setup a submission process that suits your work routine and budget and that means testing and tweaking the system until you achieve the results you want.
