Psoriasis is a very general skin curse which habitually starts at an early age and is very unremitting, coming back over a period of many years, at haphazard intervals. Some people have worsening of their symptoms in the colder winter months. It is a non-contagious skin condition that causes rapid skin cell replica ensuing in red, dry patches of thickened skin. It impacts the skin of the elbows, knees, and scalp and the trunk. Nails may also be affected, but rarely the face. About one in two patients also face Psoriasis of the fingernails. Sometimes simply one finger is affected and at other times all. A pinkish to orange color will exist on the nail with a thickening beneath the nail causing it often to come free.

The root of the condition is unknown, but in several cases there is a genetic family connection. Genetics play a deep-seated role and may be carried from parents to their children. The transfer of the trouble is not by proximity but by genes. Psoriasis is thought to be the consequence of rapid buildup of skin cells. It is also thought to be connected with emotional distress, job stress and sometimes just embarrassment of the skin condition in public. Psoriasis is seen worldwide, in all races, and both sexes. The disease has several different appearances. The characteristic lesion is a red papular eruption surrounded by scales which when scraped off have a gray color. There are lots of different types but about 80% of people with psoriasis have the type called Psoriasis Vulgaris .The lesions are dry and infection seldom develops. It is not itchy and has no allergic situations. The size of the lesions varies to a great extent, from a small area or patch on a knee or elbow to large patches covering larger areas. The patches habitually have a round ringed outline that now and again crack open. Psoriasis is seen worldwide, in all races, and both sexes .

Inverse psoriasis is a type that is located in the armpits, groin, under the breasts and in other flexion creases (skin folds) such as those in the vicinity of the genitals and buttocks. This is found predominantly in humans that are overweight since it is in the skin folds where there is sweating together with irritation from rubbing.

Painful psoriasis which needs hospitalization is called pustular psoriasis characterized by the growth of puss filled pimples and sores in clusters. Psoriasis can also be located on the head of the penis. Very often Psoriasis in moist areas, like the navel or area between the buttocks, may be confused with other skin conditions like fungal infections, skin irritation, or bacterial staphylococcal infections (impetigo)

Distinctive attacks of Psoriasis usually clear up with intensive treatment, but it is impossible to thwart future outbreaks. For nail afflictions Calcipotriol is a vitamin D derivative that is otherwise known as Calcipotriene (Dovonex) in the United States and can work pretty well in clearing up nail Psoriasis. X rays are intermittently used in the treatment of very chronic and localized patches of psoriasis. In the acute stage, with wide-ranging spreading lesions, the patient is treated in bed and a sedative soothing lotion such as calamine , lactic acid or a zinc cream is used as they help moisten and lessen the development of thickened psoriasis scales. Vaseline and Crisco vegetable shortening may also be helpful. Topical corticosteroids (steroids, such as hydrocortisone) are extremely useful and often the first-line treatment for limited or small areas of psoriasis. Every now and then a weak preparation of tar can be applied. For hundreds of years has been the home remedy for this problem. It is good as this does not trigger atrophy or otherwise known as contraction of the skin. The only problem with tar is the smell, staining and overall messiness. Mud from the Dead Sea in the Middle East may help a number of psoriasis patients and countless go to spas in Israel specially catering to the needs of people with Psoriasis and other skin ailments. Anyone who has ever had the good fortune of being able to swim in the Dead Sea for 30 minutes will tell
about the extraordinary affect that the water has on the skin. The Dead Sea mud is so affective that it is now sold commercially.

In the more chronic cases, Dithranol is a very successful local application. It is rubbed into the patchy area daily until each lesion or patch results in being red, after which Dithranol is halted and a sedative zinc cream applied. Before implementing the Dithranol, nearly all scales should be removed by means of soap and water. The danger using Dithranol is that it causes a serious inflammation of the skin. In particular, it must be barred from coming in contact with the eyes as this will cause severe conjunctivitis. Dithranol has the drawback that it stains linen.

Acitretin (Soriatane) is an oral drug used for certain types of psoriasis. It may not be used in females who are pregnant. In psoriasis of the scalp, scabs must be detached by frequently shampooing and a tar ointment rubbed in day after day. Several tar scalp remedies are accessible at retail stores and Walmart.
