To succeed in any Internet business you should realise that keywords you use for your SEO campaign are hugely important. If you unwisely go for the highest popularity keywords, you are very soon likely to face a problem of very tough competition. That, in turn, could make you believe that getting high ranks on those keywords is unworthy of your time and investments. In the worst case, you may draw the conclusion that achieving highest positions on Google for these terms is almost impossible.

If you expect your SEO tactics to be efficient, you have to act smart and commence it with keyword research and competitive analysis. The objective of those is to find keywords and phrases, which are both quite popular and, simultaneously, underused by your competitors.

The present article offers you a step by step guide on how to find out keywords that will turn your SEO project and, consequently, your Internet business into a success.

The plan of actions is given below:

1. Perform search on Google and find out keywords employed by your top ranking competitors. Compile a listing of ~ 50 most frequently used phrases and keywords for which your competitors have top-ranking.
2. Use a dictionary and extend the list by adding extra synonyms with relevant descriptive terms.
3. Insert the listing into the search box of the Google Keyword Suggestion Tool, tick "Use synonyms" and hit the button.
4. Choose to display these columns: "Estimated Average CPC" and "Approxim. Search Vol." (both average and for the previous month).
5. Export results into CSV file, open the file in MS Excel and arrange the data by the "Approx Avg Search Volume" column in descending order.
6. Delete all the keywords with fewer than 300 searches a month. Also, drop all phrases with the search trends continuously decreasing during the last year.
7. Browse the table and keep only the phrases, which sound reasonable and are relevant to your website. For a small website (fewer than a few ten pages), decrease the list to about 300 key phrases that display the highest number of searches. For bigger sites you will need to keep a longer list.
8. Add seven extra columns: "Searches a month", "Bulk" "Optimised", "Direct", "Opportunity", "Feasibility" and "Effectiveness", and save the file as an Excel document. To avoid confusion, remember that each column except the name you choose for it, in addition has a title - a letter assigned by MS Excel.
9. The next is quite a boring, but really important step. Go on Google and type in the search field the next combinations: a) "key phrase"; b) allinanchor:"key phrase" and c) allintitle:"key phrase", where "key phrase" is one of the key phrases in your list. Perform that for each phrase.
10. For every key phrase enter the 3 numbers yielded by Google into the "Bulk", "Optimised" and "Direct" columns, respectively.
11. Enter the following formulas into the top 2nd cells (immediately below the column name) of the following columns: "=MS^2/T1" into "Opportunity", "=MS^2/T3" into "Feasibility" and "=MS^2/T2" into "Effectiveness", where T1, T2 and T3 are the titles (letters) automatically assigned to the columns "Bulk", "Direct" and "Optimised", respectively; MS is the number of monthly searches.
12. Fill in those columns by selecting the cell with the formula (in every column) and dragging it down to the bottom of the column.
13. Then choose the keywords that show the bigest numbers for the "Approx Avg Search Volume", "Feasibility" and "Effectiveness", as well as the smallest numbers for "Direct".
14. If the number of suitable key phrases is now under ~150, return to step 7 and keep additional words. Instead, you can expand the list by using a thesaurus to find additional synonyms and combine them with appropriate adjectives.
15. When finished, you should have ~150-200 phrases in your list of most efficient keywords, which you will be utilizing in the SEO campaign.

Thus, you have just composed a list of highly popular key phrases, which are, on the one hand, display quite large search volume, and, on the other hand, are underused by competing websites. Those key phrases offer you much better chances to turn your SEO campaign into a success!

Now you are prepared for the on page and off page optimisation. Those, however, are subjects for additional articles to come out soon. Watch out for them!
