Low back pain (or lumbago) is a widespread ailment repeatedly triggered by something as undemanding as lifting a suitcase. What is the best way to remedy the situation? An training regiment intended specially for back muscles could be the solution, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American College of Sports Medicine.

Following an episode of low back pain has lasted between two and six weeks, or if there are numerous recurrences of low back pain, it is rational to consider back pain exercises and physical therapy for back treatment. (Some spine specialists consider back training and physical therapy sooner, particularly if the pain is severe.) In general, the goals of back pain exercises and physical therapy are to decrease back pain, increase function, and provide education on a maintenance program to prevent further recurrences.

It has been estimated that approximately 80% of individuals in Western countries have experienced low back pain (LBP) at some point in their lives. Most cases resolve within 2-4 weeks without any medicinal intervention. However, within 1 year following the first episode of LBP, 60-80% of patients will have returning pain. Current research has reported that in most cases of LBP, specific muscles of the back that stabilize the spine are reflexively inhibited (shutdown) following injury. These muscles do not impulsively recover even if patients are pain free with a return to normal activity levels. These exact muscles work together to support and stablize the spine to help prevent LBP. These muscles include the lumbar multifidi and the transversus abdominus:

The transversus abdominus is the deepest of the abdominal muscles and is also a stabilizer of the spine. Support by this muscle is considered to be the most vital of the abdominal muscle and has also been found to be in a weakened state in those who have chronic back pain or problems. Its normal action along with the action of the the lumbar multifidus muscles function together to form a deep inside corset that acts to steady the spine during movement. This pattern of guard is disrupted in patients with low back pain.

It is unclear why these muscles become dysfunctional after a low back injury, but exact exercises focusing on the contraction of these two muscles together will improve the protective stabilizing ability of the spinal muscles, reduce pain intensity, and improve activities of daily living as well as improve body awareness and posture.

The benefits of regular exercise are indisputable. You will be stronger and sharper for all of the activities in your everyday life, including chasing the kids, running errands, conducting business meetings, or unloading the groceries. In addition, you will have more energy to pursue new and exciting hobbies! With new-discovered energy, and a stronger, more efficient body and mind, you will feel like a brand-new YOU!
