The receiving door is where successful inventory control should start. An accurate digital receiving scale will assure that shipments are correct and that you are never paying for more than what you are getting. Furthermore, you will have a precise understanding of the actual amount of goods in your inventory.

Common Features

Typically a digital receiving scale will feature an LCD display attached to the scale by a long cord. These displays often come with a wall mount so they can be easily read at eye level during weighing, and are removed from possible damage from heavy impact or liquid spills. Usually, digital receiving scales can be purchased in either of two different weighing capacities: a smaller scale which has a minimum capacity of a tenth of a pound and a maximum capacity of 500 pounds, or a larger capacity, heavy duty scale that can weigh from two tenths of a pound up to 1000 pounds. The larger scales are ideal for warehouse and industrial use.

Digital scales that use four load cell technology are preferred because these scales are more accurate when weighing off-center loads. Other ideal features include:

* Lightweight and portable design. Many receiving scales are constructed for portability and use rechargeable batteries (A.C. adapters are sometimes included).
* Low profile. Most digital receiving scales are platform style scales, and objects are meant to be placed on top of them. The higher the profile of the platform, the more difficult moving items on and off the platform will be.
* Automatic power shut off. If your scale is powered by batteries, this feature will save you a lot of money over time. Check to see how long the automatic shut off takes to engage; anything less than three to four minutes might cause you to be continually have to turn the scale back on if you tend to take your time with items or will be multitasking while weighing.
* Low battery indicator. This very helpful mode will help prevent an unexpected power loss.
* Durability. Scales that are made with stainless steel load cells perform very well over time and constant weightings and are easy to clean as well. Damage from moisture is a real concern, so solid state components are essential.
* Keyboard buttons that are easy to see, access and use for the most basic functions such as on, off and clear.
* Push button tare; tare is a function that automatically can subtract the weight of a container from its contents. This is a useful feature that really eliminates the risk of human calculation errors.
* Push button unit conversion; whichever your need, pounds or kilograms, most digital receiving scales can give you the right measurement unit with just the touch of a button.
* Automatic hold. Auto hold can lock in the weight of an object and leaves the amount on the display after it is removed from the scale.
* Non skid feet. Non skid feet help keep the scale stable and minimize the risk of damage to the object on the platform.
