When one hears the terms server proxies the idea that comes to mind is that of a server that one uses to surf the Web without being known. However, there are actually different types, and being familiar with them is essential for their appropriate usage.

One of the most widely used types is that of the cache server variety. Its function is to store the files that are commonly and frequently accessed by computers over networks. You will find this utilized in a lot of the networks used by companies and also some Internet servers. The benefits of using these types of proxies is that they free up a lot of the bandwidth; instead of retrieving the data over and over, the computer can just get the info from the cache system.

Another popular type is the one used to browse the Web. Generally this is used by companies or universities to monitor and limit access to certain websites. However, somewhat confusingly, this type of server is also used to refer to applications and servers that circumvent this filtering software.

For this reason perhaps, the term web content filtering proxies are used to describe the applications that restrict web access and usage. When this is installed in the computer, it will also keep a log, keep track of all the urls that are accessed by the user, and also check the use of bandwidth or in some cases, limit it. This type of server is usually set up by the administrator, who will also possess all the key settings and configurations. If you want to control your network, be sure only you have access to these files.

There are other types that you need to recognize. Hostile proxies for example, are the ones used to monitor and watch the interaction between the client (the computer) and the web (the sites being accessed). An anonymous server is used to describe the software or connection that is utilized by users to remove any traces of where they have been on the Net.

There are other types that you might encounter. The transparent server or intercepting server is used to describe servers that interact with a gateway. This is used in large companies for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that it eliminates the need for setting up the browser.

If you are an adminsitrator, you need to be aware of the various types of proxies, servers and software around. This will allow you to manage and oversee the operation of your network clearly.
