For the uninitiated, the word 'Anxiety attack' or 'Anxiety disorder' conjure up this vague, undefined picture of someone cowering in a corner or breathing into a paper bag. The fact of the matter is that the term Anxiety disorder covers a whole slew of disorders ranging from general anxiety disorder to Obsessive compulsive behavior to Agoraphobia.

Let's take a look at the different disorders covered by this general term.

General Anxiety Disorder: This is typified by general feelings of anxiety, worry and stress, even though the exact cause cannot be pinpointed. This would typically be experienced by people who worry about non-specific issues and struggle to get through the day, and through life in general. They often suffer from insomnia.

Social anxiety disorder and Agoraphobia are sometimes interlinked. Social anxiety disorder is related to the fear that one might have of social situations, of being embarrassed in public places. Agoraphobia comes from two Greek words, one for marketplace, or open area, and one for fear, and it is related to the fear of public places. These days it is often thought that the fear stems from a result of a fear of having a panic attack in a public place from which there is no escape, so in a sense, this fear stems from suffering from an anxiety disorder (panic attacks) already and might be seen as a complication of a specific type of anxiety disorder.

Panic disorder - this is typically described as someone suffering from panic attacks, where the sufferer is attacked by feelings of irrational fear and often displays physical symptoms such as shortness of breath, heart palpitations and feelings of choking. The biggest problem faced by people suffering from panic attacks is that they cannot distinguish between having a panic attack and having a full-on heart attack.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorders (OCD). People who suffer from this suffers from irrational fears that make them perform certain ritualistic actions, such as washing their hands continually, or performing certain repetitive actions such as checking that the door is really locked or the stove really switched off.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. This disorder should really fall into a class of its own since it is a disorder that occurs after an unnatural event, such as being exposed to terrifying situations or being trapped in a physical ordeal in which severe harm was being threatened. This type of situation can bring about anxiety disorders and panic attacks long after the event

If yourself or a loved one has been diagnosed with any of these disorders, you would do well to educate yourself about the different types of disorders and the different types of treatments available for them.
