Diet Carb: A Guide for Teens

If you are a teen, you may be familiar with the different types of slimming diet program such as the Dr Atkins diet, the South Beach Diet, The Zone Diet and many other popular and widely used weight loss programs that are used by millions of Americans to help achieve their own weight loss goals. Perhaps you have seen the variety of low carb foods around and the associated candy bars, energy packs and other shakes and cereals that supports those different types of weight loss program. A lot of these diet programs tend to focus on the removal of carbohydrates from the diet.

In reality, not all diet carb are created equally so it is highly inaccurate to say that the diet carb is either bad or good but each is classified into a different category according to the chemical structure of that diet carb. Therefore is wrong to say that carb are bad and should be avoided at all costs if you are trying to lose weight.

So what are carb actually and how do I find the right diet carb to help me lose weight?

Carb is short for carbohydrate which is a class of food that is found the bottom of the food pyramid. It is a source of energy that is found in grains; bread, wholemeal, whet grains and corn, Vegetables and fruits do possess their own carb so generally this would be included as carb as well. When carb is consumed, it is transformed into energy that is used by the body. When excess carb is consumed, the body would not transform it to into usable energy and it would be stored as glycogen in the liver. More carb consumed would finally be stored as fat In the body. Both glycogen and fat are stored energy which acts as a handy emergency energy source at times of famine and starvation.

The normal teenage menu such as soda, chocolates, cakes and cookies would all be transformed into glucose for an immediate boost of energy and glycogen to be stored as an emergency energy supply. If you eat any of these in abundance then you would start packing on the pounds and your weight would escalate as well.

If you are teenager trying to lose weight and wish to know which diet carb you should consume, then complex carb is the answer. Complex car consists of whole grains such as corn, oatmeal, brown rice, rice bran and other fibrous foods. This has a filling effect and leaves you feeling full and satiated longer after you eat them.

You should strive to eat nutritious carb such as fruits, and vegetables beans whole grains and milk. Your body needs energy from these types of healthy carb. The key is to select the right carb to eat and forego the unhealthy ones. Choose carb that comes from the whole grains and unprocessed. You need about 30% of carbohydrate in your daily menu. Make sure you make the smart choice and go for the healthier ones.
