The sun is one of the most powerful energy sources we have at our disposal. It is always there and is virtually inexhaustible. Solar cells are also known as photoelectric cells. These are the most commonly used type of cell . They are combined into an array of modules and into what we call a panel.
There are alternatives to using solar cells to create energy these include , Solar water heaters. These use the suns energy by storing the heat from the sun not the light. This is by glass panels which are set on a roof or in any area of maximum sunlight. They use the heat from the sun to heat up water thus saving a lot of electricity.
Another alternative to panels are solar furnaces. Theses are possibly on e of the more basic uses of the suns light yet it has only recently been developed ad used in any great amount. These are basically giant mirrors which reflect a large amount of sunlight and condense it into a small area. This area of focus heats up to an enormous temperature but this depends greatly on the amount of sunlight being reflected and the intensity of the light.. The heat generated by this is can be used to make electricity, melt metals or creating hydrogen.
Now that you know how impressive and powerful the sun is, you might want to think about DIY solar panels. These are not as difficult to build as you might think. While it may seem daunting at first , you should start out with a small project , perhaps powering a calculator, radio or light bulb, before you try to hook up your entire house. There are many free guides on the internet that will allow you to properly research your DIY solar panel project. Take the time to understand the science behind why they work and this will allow you to properly adapt and modify your DIY solar panel if you need to.
Let your friends and family know about your project, it might inspire them to take an interest in their environment and make them realise how much money they could save by switching to a cleaner source of fuel.
