Spray and pray marketing is methods of advertising your business that can’t be traced. It’s like going out to the middle of the city with a can of spray paint. You choose a random wall and spray your company logo and contact information there. Now, you go home and pray that someone sees it. Not only just sees it, but gets the urgency to contact or visit your business.

The first thing you have to realize is that advertising doesn’t necessarily mean that you are marketing your business. Just throwing an advertisement in the air won’t have any effect, like my earlier example stated.
The key to getting quality customers that want to buy your product or service is all about how you target your marketing efforts. First, you need to put advertisements where people are going to see it that will be interested in your business. To do this, you have to understand your customer. Secondly, you have to know how effective each method of marketing is. Now just because you are using a Yellow Pages ad doesn’t mean it can’t be an effective method. Each business is different and not one of you will have the same marketing strategies implemented.
How about if you turned that spray and pray Yellow Pages ad into a traceable advertisement that can be tested for optimal performance. One method of doing this is to offer a special promotion on the Yellow Page ad. For example:
“One free massage with this free coupon!”
The actual ad is the coupon and when someone brings that in to your establishment, you know exactly where it came from.
Now you can see exactly how effective it is. When you are able to trace your advertisements, you will be able to tweak headlines, promotions, graphics, etc to see which converts the best.
So you want to cut your budget? Then get rid of any spray and pray methods you are using. You can implement a system that allows you to trace your efforts, or you continue to lose money every month.
