Because silk and wool are more expensive to produce, the shift toward nylon has been more out of necessity than anything else. Wool carpet is available in some US mills, however the cost is much higher. Wool can easily be substituted for nylon if specified.

The Tools and Equipment

The equipment required to fabricate custom rugs is remarkably light weight and inexpensive. Most of the tools are specialized hand tools, including a high powered shearing device that, when properly used, bevels intricate designs within the plush carpet.

The bulk of costs generally reflect the labor involved – higher complexity equals higher costs. Custom rug fabrication does cost more than typical machine made rugs found online and at your local carpet dealer. You have to weigh out the benefits and decide if it's the right direction that appeals to you.
