The IT industry is quite unique because of the wide variety of skills it requires in order to operate. It does seem as though the IT recruitment boom has declined somewhat in the last few years. This is because studies have shown that there is an increasing shortage of IT skills in the UK. This shortage is partly due to factors like increased retirements and high labor turnovers. Furthermore, the number of students enrolling into IT programs has also fallen by a large extent. This drop also further explains why there is a shortage in IT sills. As an increasing number of firms begin to focus less attention on technical skills and as aggregate pay within the IT sector falls, this shortage in IT skills is set to continue.

Experts in the IT field have stated that there is currently a high demand for IT workers who have good communication and interpersonal skills. This increased demand for IT professionals with excellent communication skills translates into a higher demand for skilled business analysts and project managers. Research carried out by reputable IT experts have shown that the demand for IT professionals with interpersonal skills has overtaken the demand for programmers and software developers. It is also worth mentioning that firms are more willing to increase the wages they pay for business-conversant IT people over those who possess ‘hard’ IT skills. According to research, this trend will not be changing any time soon.

For any job applicant to succeed in the current IT market, it does look as though they will need a combination of IT and business skills. The days of high demand for ‘pure’ IT skills is now long gone. In order to deal with this shift in trends, companies must invest more in offering students more internships or work placements. This calls for the creation of close partnerships between companies and educational institutions. If this can be done successfully, then more candidates will have a better idea of what IT skills employers find most desirable. Other more general skills that are in current demand in the IT sector include networking skills, messaging skills, enterprise application skills and database skills. In any case, employers within the IT industry are looking to hire people with specific skills. This is something Quanta can assist companies with. They are also more than willing to pay the right wage if you have the what they are looking for.
