Although the term Systemic Candida has been used for decades by practitioners of natural medicine, it is also gaining favor amoung many GPs as a possible cause of many unexplained illnesses. So what is it, who can get it, how does it affect us and can it be cured?

Many of you will understand the basics of any yeast infection - the Candida yeast turns into the Candida fungus and all hell begins to break loose as you get the various symptoms of your infection.. These external symptoms are really easy to diagnose and treat - think Athletes Foot, Vaginal Thrush, Jock Itch or even diaper rash!

But what would happen if we decided not to treat our symptoms? What if there were no symptoms?

Once a Candida overgrowth is established it is amazingly easy for it to find its way into the bloodstream and GI tract. From there it can pretty much settle wherever it likes and on whatever organ it likes, causing damage not just to the organ involved, but because it damages that organs ability to function properly, it also impacts on the internal systems that rely on that organ. This is why it is so aptly named Systemic Candida.

Getting a definite Systemic Candida diagnosis is notoriously difficult because of the huge number of areas that can be affected by the fungi. Each area has its own set of symptoms, so a person presenting with weak legs, a person complaining of massive brain fog and the person with heart problems could very realistically all be suffering from a Systemic Candida infection.

How do we get a Systemic Candida infection?
It is actually pretty easy for your yeast infection to become systemic.

Any external infection - like Athletes Foot or thrush can be transferred to your internal organs.

The fungi can gain access through any open wound, surgery, a long course of antibiotics, catheterization or simply by having lowered immunity - as in HIV or even extreme stress.

Systemic Candida can also be transfered to the bloodstream via the digestive system.. If the Candida is left untreated at this point then it is very easy for it to jump from the digestive organs into the bloodstream and the rest of your organs.

Examples of the type of things that you may experience with a Systemic Candida infection include:
Eczema,
Restless legs
Double vision
Skin lesions
Chronic fatigue
Depression
Impotence
Memory loss
Recurrent infections such as "jock itch", tinea, ringworm and vaginal or urinary infections
Prostatitis
Heart palpitations
Muscle problems
Digestive problems

These are just a few of the many signs and symptoms that a Systemic Candida infection can cause. As you are no doubt aware, they can all also be caused by many other diseases which is why getting a diagnosis can be so difficult.

Is Systemic Candida curable?

The good news is that because your systemic Candida is a fungal infection it is able to be treated. By following a recommended program that will eradicate your Candida overgrowth you do stand to make a full recovery. You will have to follow the program closely and for a while longer than those without the systemic infection, but the results will be well worth the effort.
