Some years ago, I had an crisis operation, which to my consternation left me stuck in bed for six weeks. I am the nature of person who wishes to keep busy, but I was enforced to rest and to recover from my ordeal. With children off to school, husband out at work all day, I was at home with hours of free time on my hands.

I picked up a book on Crocheting. I love reading books that promote intelligence and knowledge as it yields incessant benefit over a lifetime. So I determined that of spending hours reading fiction, I would train myself to do a little that is not too active but at least will be innovative. I decided to crochet a pouch style drawstring hot water bottle holder. A hot water bottle being the nearest thing I could find in my bed.

Crocheting , a unique craft in its own right was constantly a hot trend amid women staying at home. Why? It’s easy, intriguing and versatile - plus the resulting product is amazing. To my astonishment I completed it within a few hours and it looked great. Visitors popping in to say their hellos loved the completed piece and before long I was in business producing the covers for all and sundry.

After I had recuperated I continued my hobby but extended it to Macramé making. What is the divergence between crocheting and Macramé you may ask. Crocheting uses soft resources such as wool, yarn or crochet cotton whereas macramé uses thicker twine, hemp or sting. Macramé is a way of textile-making using knotting rather than knitting or weaving. Its major knots are the square knots and forms of hitching full ones and half hitches. The ornamental knotting forms to fashion the article. There are several principal Macramé knots that I had to teach them .They are really very easy. The overhand knot, the square knot, the half knot, the lark's head and the half hitch. I would suggest that you use You Tube to see spot on how the knots are formed. Not strenuous at all. Once you've mastered these basic Macramé knots, you will be able to create endless variations and mixtures with just these few knots. Knotting does require some practice in order to get the knots the same and be able to make even rows, but once you have that you will be well on your way. The most popular article I made was principally a basket that encloses a pot plant with four long suspender lines for hanging the pot plant. The four suspension belts were unified around a metal ring which might be hung from everywhere, thus suspending the pot plant or fern.

I used cotton twine, several colors interwoven to create a pattern. These items could not be found in stores anywhere, so it made them pretty unique. I found that most women bought two or three for their homes. Very soon I had a very busy cottage industry going and I had to employ assistants to come and assist. The ladies were all very keen to become skilled at how to make the items and I am sure they were thinking of a cottage industry of their own. I did that for a number of months until I was quite recuperated and ready to go back to work and one of my senior helpers took over the cottage industry. That is how I changed my emergency to something positive. If I could do it, I would encourage others to do it as well.

I have one more tip for all you ladies. While doing the macramé business I printed a lot of advertisement flyers but found the printer ink to be very costly.A friend told me about this lovely place online called Peachtree Ink that supply ink at such a low price that I could easily afford to print as many flyers as I wanted to without distressing about the outlay.
