Conserving water

Unlike what we previously believed, water is not a resource that can be taken for granted anymore. What with pollution in devastating levels and activities by man that have caused water bodies to dry up, we cannot afford to think we can go on the way we did and get away with it. We have to understand that it is up to each and every one of us to make sure water is conserved, and the planet s made habitable for future generations.

When landscaping there are many things that can be taken into consideration that will make sure as much water conservation as possible takes place for the entire project. This method is also called 'xeriscaping', in which water conservation and being environmentally friendly are the two key things maintained when landscaping. There are many things that need to be considered when xeriscaping, all which lead to better use of water in the garden, and hence water conservation.

The first of this is to plan appropriately. You need to be aware of the kind of trees shrubs and plants you want in your garden, and where exactly you want to place them. A landscape designer or a garden designer can help in this decision, to make sure the best possible plan is laid. Next comes knowing what kind of soil you have, and choosing the right kind of plants for the soil. Choosing plants that are native to your area will mean that they are better equipped for the weather conditions in the area, which will then mean they do not need extra water or fertilizer for growth. They will also be better resistant to pest attacks, and so there will be lesser amounts of pesticide needed. Choosing the correct grass comes into this as well, and maintaining grass at the recommended 3 inch level will mean less water is needed for maintenance. Mowing grass at the correct times also makes sure that extra watering is not necessary.

If you have a sprinkler system set up in your garden, make sure it is not aimed at the driveway or path where it is not necessary. Also making sure the watering times are set properly and are at the best times (evenings preferably to reduce the chance of evaporation), you can ensure that there is as little wastage as possible. Again, a garden designer can help greatly with the setting up of the sprinkler system, and you can get the advice of a gardener to check what the best times for setting the watering system would be for the plants you have in your garden. Using mulch around trees and shrubs will mean that maximum water retention is maintained around the roots, which again will help in water conservation.

Ornaments like waterfalls can still be set up in the garden, provided a re-usable system is made so that the same water is sent through the pipes throughout. This not only makes you garden look nicer, it also does not waste water. There are many other small accessories that can be added to your garden, provided there is space, and that your budget allows for it. Always make sure that whatever plan you make, you stick to your budget, and also select landscape designers who come recommended from others, as this way you are sure they will do the job you want.
