Choosing A Good Home Improvement Contractor

Trusting your house to a home improvement company is a big commitment. You are relying on them to do the work right, use quality materials, and finish on time and on budget. You expect the improvements to your home will add value and that your home improvement contractor will respect your family, your time and your home. It’s a tall order – knowing how to narrow down your choices can save you a lot of time and grief once you’re ready to begin making improvements to your home.

There are several questions you should ask before signing a contract with a home improvement company, including:

1. Does the home improvement company have a website? If it does, be sure to poke around the site. It should be updated regularly, have clear, informative content and give you contact information in the event you need to talk to a live person. Lots of broken links and limited or poorly written information can be a red flag.

2. Does the company have an actual physical address? Don’t use a home improvement company if they don’t have their physical address on their website, their business cards and their quote forms and contracts. Some fly-by-night companies can only be reached by telephone for a simple reason – they work out of the back of a van and may not be around tomorrow. If the company has an actual office address, that’s good. If they have a showroom, it’s even better.

3. Do they offer recognizable name brand materials? Top home improvement contractors work with only the best materials. Look for name brand siding, windows and roofing materials that you trust. Take the time to look for some reviews of the products to see how they compare to others on the market.

4. How long has the company been in business? Ideally, you’ll work with a home improvement company that has been in business for at least ten years or more. This ensures they have the experience, expertise and reliability to do your home improvements professionally.

5. Is the company local? Home improvement companies that are locally owned and operated are invested in the community. They will take pride in what they do and how they do it, which can make a huge difference in your own home improvement results.

6. Is the company’s customer service top notch? Don’t be afraid to call the customer service number when you’re considering a home improvement company. The way they treat you over the phone is a good indication of how you will be treated throughout the remodeling process.

The six questions outlined above can be used to narrow your search down to a few of the best home improvement contractors in your area. From there, schedule times with each of them for a free consultation. After talking to each contractor, you’ll quickly realize which one is the right home improvement specialist for your project.
