One of the most popular autos to come out from the stable of General Motors, the largest automobile manufacturer in the US, is the Chevy Chevelle from the series of Chevrolet. Introduced in the year 1964, Chevrolet Chevelle is intended to primarily compete with Ford Motor Company's Ford Fairline vehicle.

Another important aspect of Chevrolet Chevelle is that it is not meant for any particular class or sector of people and is more of a people's car with a number of models and variations provided for choice of the customers. In a nutshell, the range of Chevrolet Chevelle versions includes the basic family autos, convertibles as well as coupes. Compared along with the Pontiac GTO, Chevrolet Chevelle is one of the most popular cars in the mid-size car segment, primarily due to better performance and the compact looks, which appeal to the eye of the customers and is a matter of pride to be the owner of such classic cars from the stable of General Motors. Priced reasonably, Chevrolet Chevelle rose in popularity both as a sports car with luxury as well as a mid-size family car that is strong in performance and effective in fuel savings.

Categorized under the mid-size category, Chevy Chevelle was introduced as a station-wagon in 1964 with two doors. In addition to the station wagon, two more variants, one as a hardtop coupe and another as a convertible, were also introduced in the year 1964.

Termed as Sport Sedan, or SS, Chevrolet Chevelle SS marked the entry of General Motors into the automobile market for midsize autos. The first set of cars introduced in the year 1964 had the Malibu SS badge on the rear quarter of the panel. The engines for the Chevelle were of 327 V8 capacities in the year 1964, which subsequently were enhanced to 396 V8 capacities.

The Chevy Chevelle car has many interesting features such as rich interiors provided with either black or while colored vinyl coatings, wheel covers in a radial pattern, console, forward bucket seats as well as quartet of gauges. Another interesting aspect of the Chevelle is the provision for a four-speed gear box in place of the usual gear box with three-speed alternatives. Chevelle in addition included a power glide and an overdrive, apart from dual exhausts and a four-barrel carburetor.

The base engine for the Chevy Chevelle introduced in 1964 had a capacity of 120-bhp power, along with Hi-thrift 194-cid with a provision to increase the same to 230-cid and increasing the capacity to 155 bhp. The side glasses provided in the vehicle are of curved shape, making it a bit more extra-ordinary than others in the field of mid-size cars. The sports version of Chevy Chevelle, with a performance of 283-cid and 220-bhp edition is capable of completing a quarter-mile distance in less than 18 seconds.

The Chevy Chevelle car was sold in the market under various name plates, the prominent among them being the Nomad, Greenbrier, Concours, and Concours Estate. This classic has always been a truely exciting model.
