One is able to rechristen their forename, surname, add or remove names, change the spelling of their names and rearrange the existing forenames. There is no restriction on changing the names frequently as one can do it as often he wants for any number of times.

There are no much restrictions for the names which one wishes to change. But if it is impossible to pronounce it, or if it has numbers or signals, or if it conveys vulgar or offensive meaning, then those names might not be allowed. If one wants to change his name to Sir, Lord, Lady, Baroness, Count, Countess, general and colonel by way of misleading others that the person was conferred or had inherited the title, then those names will not be allowed.

Changing a name is as easy as pronouncing it. One need not take much strain to get his or her name changed. That is why even if some one does not like his or her name they are changing it as they wish, and anyone can change it when the situation forces them to do so. There are many reasons for an individual to change his name.

If a couple get separated, the woman can revert to her maiden name. Almost all the women do not like to have their husband’s name once they have obtained divorce. However, in these cases, deed poll is not necessary as her marriage evidence itself provides ample documentary evidence of her maiden name.

In some cases, at the time of marriage, the woman may want to have her maiden name as a middle name besides adopting her husband’s surname. Sometimes, at the time of marriage or entering into a civil partnership, the couple might choose to have a hyphenated surname. If a mother is unmarried and her child was registered with the father’s surname, she can change her child’s name at any time and can register her surname with the child’s name.

Even transsexuals wish to change their name after a gender change operation has been conducted. Gay and lesbian couples might also want to share their partner’s name. Entertainers will also change their name which is being used on stage. For example, many Jewish entertainers in the UK have changed their names to get mass appeal and to fit in the industry.

Many people are changing the name without any reason attached to it. They might get attraction towards a new name or simply they do not like their old name.

After a name has been changed, one should get his or her name changed in all the documents such as the UK passport, driving licence, bank account and credit cards, tax and insurance records. One should write to the department concerned with name change proof for getting those records in their new name. Once you receive the legal document of your name change, you are committed to use your new name at all times. You should stop using the former name in all the documents and should require others to address you by the changed name only.

Though one can change a name through deed poll, it is not possible to imply any changes in the birth, marriage, civil partnership, decree absolute and educational certificates because they are historical records which should be in the correct name.

One can change his or her name for whatever reason unless it has any fraudulent purposes. Any British citizen who has crossed 16 years can use the deed poll. It is recognised only by the United Kingdom government departments, companies and organisations. A foreign national living in the UK should check with their country’s competent authorities.

If a mother wants to change her child’s name, she should get a written permission from her husband if they have separated; otherwise a court order must be obtained. To change a child’s name it is necessary to send a consent letter from the child along with the form. In the same way, a minor cannot change his or her name without the consent of the parents. If a person has parental responsibility, then he alone can change the name of the child.

Name change deed poll is simply a formal written document with witnesses. Once a person has obtained the document, he or she can utilise it immediately and can change the records.

Thus, changing a name is an easy task and one can get it quickly without much legal process and complexities. The law will not mind the reason for change unless it has violated the restrictions.
