There are various reasons why you have to change the proxy settings for your web browser. One of the most common reasons for doing this is when your regular server is down and you need to access an online resource. Sometimes you just need access to a remote computer that is on a foreign server.

Most browsers support a manual change of these settings. Our list of steps below will show you how to change these settings for some of the most popular browsers out there. You might have to consult support information from your browser's manufacturer in case it is not covered here in our list of steps.

Configuring Proxy Settings for Internet Explorer

Two of the most popular versions of Internet Explorer are versions five and six. Configuring settings for both these browsers are almost identical with only a slight variation in the procedure. Click 'Tools' in Internet Explorer then go to 'Internet Options' and then 'Connections'. You'll find a list of connections that are used to go online, if you have only one connection then that will be listed.

Click the connection you use on the list to highlight it and then click the 'Settings' button. Put a check on the box that says 'Use a proxy server' and then enter the information for the boxes for the port and address. Click 'OK' on this and on the next window as well.

Configuring Proxy Settings for Mozilla Firefox

To configure Firefox, there may be slight variations among different versions as well; go to the tools menu then click 'Options'. Click 'Advanced' in the Options window then go to the 'Network' tab. Next, click on the 'Settings' button then a Connection Settings window will pop up.

You then click on the 'Manual proxy configuration' radio button and enter all the necessary information in each of the boxes. However, if your company has set the settings for your entire network you might just want to choose 'Auto-detect proxy settings for this network' if you don't want to configure Firefox manually.

Configuring Proxy Settings for Opera

To set up Opera to use proxy servers you first launch it then go to 'Tools' then 'Preferences'. Next you click on 'Advanced' and then 'Network'. For Mac users you need to go to 'Preferences' then 'Advanced' then finally to 'Network'. You then click the 'Proxy servers' button and you'll open a dialog box.

The next step is to tick the boxes for the server host name and protocol. Be sure to obtain all the necessary information from you network administrator when configuring these settings.

Configuring proxy settings for different browsers may become necessary when your original server is down. Be sure to get all the necessary information from your administrator before changing any settings yourself.
