Change Your Lightbulbs - It May Change Your Life

I love to save. I save everything. I hate to throw away just about anything. I am so bad that I can't even reject something, and I'm just talking about inanimate objects. For instance, my son brought home several new cell phones for me to try out. The idea was I was supposed to pick the one I liked best to be my new phone, and the others would go back to the store. Well, I felt bad picking any one of them. Each one seemed special to me, and I didn't want to reject any of them. I was in a total state of anxiety until finally made my decision.

OK, I digress. Back to saving. I am the kind of person that neurotically turns off lights whenever I leave a room. And I never throw away a tea bag unless I've squeezed out every ounce of its essence. I reuse tin foil that I've used to cover pans and containers of food (if they aren't too dirty.) My children wear their clothes two days in a row, (if they aren't too dirty) and they only take baths when they are dirty, (maybe, if I can convince them to.) But all of this savings pales in comparison to the ultimate thing that I love to save: money.

I love coupons, sales, bargaining, eBay, second hand clothing stores, and recycling whenever possible.

So you can see that the latest trend for everyone to save energy is right up my alley. I feel that the world has finally caught up with me. So not only do I get excited by the prospect of saving electricity, I go absolutely bonkers if I think that I can save energy and save money at the same time. So consider some of the following tips for saving on your electric bill as coming from a real expert.

We can begin with something easy, painless, convenient, and worthwhile. How about turning off your computer at night when you won't be using it for at least 6-8 hours. It only saves a little, but all those littles can add up to a whole lot after a few weeks, months and a year. And it must be good for the computer to have a long rest once in a while, don't you think? So say good-night to your Twitter and Facebook friends and start saving money. (You can always update Facebook or Twitter from your phone in the middle of the night, if you really have to!)

Let's now talk real savings. Have you thought about changing the light bulbs in your house from incandescent to compact fluorescent? Here lies great savings; however this was a real dilemma for me. Should I throw away perfectly good incandescents immediately before they have burned out on their own? It means immediate savings on my electric bill, but it means wasting whatever life was left in the incandescents. Also, am I rejecting Thomas Alva Edison by rejecting his light bulbs? An almost unbearable possibility. I chose to compromise, which you should feel free to do if you are anything like me. I am changing over as needed. When the incandescents burn out, they will be replaced by compact fluorescents.
