Before your trip to Cyprus, visit government and motoring organisation websites to check out the latest rules and regulations governing the roads there. Use these websites to familiarise yourself with road signs and signals, speed limits, parking restrictions and more.

Hiring a car in Cyprus gives you the kind of freedom that allows you to visit as many places as you want, whenever suits you. To help you get the most out of your trip, read up on the area you are going to be visiting and take note of any places that interest you. That way you can plan your day trips in the car ahead of time.

Be wary of car crime - always park your vehicle in a well-lit area. When you leave your car unattended, remember to check that your sunroof and all windows are firmly closed and that the doors and the car boot are all locked too.

Valuable items left lying in your hire car can attract thieves. Never keep anything of value in your car unless you really have to. You will find that most vehicle hire insurance will not pay to replace stolen goods, so you should check if your travel insurance does instead. If you must leave items in your car, cover them up, or preferably lock them securely in the boot or glove compartment.

Should you suffer a flat tyre, your car hire insurance will not usually cover the cost of repair. To keep costs down, swap it for the spare and then take the tyre to be repaired at a local garage. This will usually be cheaper than paying your car hire company for the repair.

Remember that when driving in Cyprus you will have to drive on the left hand side of the road instead of the right. Although this can be uncomfortable at first, you will find that you soon get used to it. Take extra care when on motorways, as cars will overtake you from the opposite side that you are used to, and watch out too at roundabout, pulling out of parking spaces and garages and junctions.

With the growth of Sat Nav technology, your hire car will most likely come with its own Sat Nav system installed. This can make it much easier to navigate your way around Cyprus, but you should take a map too, just in case your Sat Nav fails you. Check to see if local maps come with the car, otherwise they should be cheaply available from bookshops, tourist information centres, and maybe even your hotel.

Tempting as it is to simply pick up your hire car and go, especially when you are picking it up from the airport and are keen to dump your luggage at the hotel, it pays to take your time. Check your vehicle over before you head off as if there are any faults, this will be a hassle, and you may even be charged for them when they are not your fault. If you notice anything amiss, mention it before you set off so the car hire company is fully aware.
