Cyprus is the island of Aphrodite, and enjoys average sunshine of 300 days a year. As such, it is not hard to understand why Cyprus is so popular with tourists, and has such a well developed tourist industry. While the traditional holiday activity of sitting on the beach is possible across the coast of the island, there are plenty of diversions worth exploring by car.

The Akmas Peninsula is largely unspoilt, and is a great place to get close to the native plants and animals of the island. The area is popular with walkers and mountain biking enthusiasts, and is best reached by car.

Latchi Harbour is not far away, and again, is an unspoilt part of the island that has not suffered overdevelopment. The village is a great place to sample fresh seafood, and additionally, watersports from water skiing to dingy sailing are on offer.

If you wish to see a traditional Cypriot village, a visit to Neo Chorio is well worth while. Traditional Cypriot stone buildings frame narrow streets, and the local pottery makes good souvenirs. You can also see good examples of the local cottage industry of weaving.

While you are on tour in your hire car, you can try finding some of the Venetian stone bridges hidden throughout the island. The bridges are a legacy of the Venetian rulers who occupied Cyprus in the 15th and 16th centuries. Try seeing how many you can spot on a day''s touring!

The western side of Cyprus is covered with pine forests which can be explored both by car; and on a bike on one of the many well maintained forest trails. You''ll find these forests in the Tilliria, Marathasa, and Solea valley regions.

Near Paphos, in the southwest of the island, is Aphrodite''s Rock. Legend has it that this was the birthplace of the Goddess Aphrodite, and the rock itself can be climbed by the adventurous.

A visit to Mount Olympus is a visit to the home of the Gods themselves! Although the peak of the mountain is an army restricted zone, it is possible to get close to the summit, and enjoy spectacular views of the island on a clear day.
