Candy, the word takes you back to your childhood. Everyone has a favorite, the one that when they get to bite into it again memories of summer afternoons, tire swings and running through the sprinklers come to mind. Hearing stories from your parents about back when they were a kid ‘Necco-wafers’ were only a dime makes you smile that funny little half-smile.

These days candy and their makers come in all sorts of kinds and styles and flavors that finding a new favorite is almost impossible. Hard candies, chocolates and taffy’s of the past are outnumbered by the suckers, gummies, tart and sour candies…and all of these now available in ‘sugar-free’ makes the candy world open to so many more people, like those who suffer from diabetes.

It is not just the new candies that are going the ‘sugar-free’ route but even the time-true ones, so all generations get their favorite. Most people develop favorites within a category of candy. For example within the gummy family a favorite may be gummy peaches or gummy bears. Or in terms of loli-pops the old school tootsie-pop or a standard dum-dum. Or maybe it is a flavor more than the type of candy, strawberry, cherry, grape, lemon, orange to name a few.

Along with the thousands of kinds of candy there are hundreds of uses for them. There are the classic applications for Gingerbread Houses and cookie decorations, as well as for the holidays each have their own special candy that is associated with them- peppermint for Christmas, chocolate bunnies and eggs for Easter, gummy vampire teeth for Halloween, chocolate filled hearts for Valentine’s Day, boxed chocolates for Mother’s Day and candy filled piñata’s for birthday parties.

Candy can be found in every store regardless of what the store sells, these are called impulse buys and they are usually right next to the registers – so your small kids are for sure to see them because you have no choice but to go near it and stand next to it. But there are few stores that specialize in candy and sell nothing but it and offer candies from today as well as those of yester-year.

The corner candy store is a thing of the past so finding such a gem is great when it come to those candy holidays, being able to create a special gift customized with a loved one’s favorite candies makes it all the more fun- inducing their own sugar-filled memories and making new ones. Even these stores have specialty items, take Jelly-belly they have thousands of jelly-beans and sprinkle in some chocolates, gummy things and jawbreakers. There are taffy stores- they do the same and the good ones let you watch them pull the taffy too, kids love that.

These days you can even personalize the candies for whatever special occasion you might have- graduations, wedding, anniversary parties- you name it! You can just personalize the wrapper with color and words or even a picture. Or personalize the candy itself- M&Ms offers this and it’s so much fun even sweethearts for Valentine’s Day being able to make them convey that special message.

Candy is more than sugar and flavor- it is smiles and memories. Take the time to learn your favorites and those of your loved ones and share the smiles and warm fuzzy feelings.
