Only about four percent of mammogram tests lead to a direct diagnosis of cancer. Essentially, a mammogram is used to determine that abnormal tissue is present. The power of a biospy can be used to determine, with great accuracy, if caner is present.

A biospy is often ordered by a doctor if abnormal growth was discovered during a self breast exam or a mammogram. Needing a breast biospy does not mean that you have cancer, it is just another tool in a doctor’s arsenal to verify what abnormal tissue growth actually is. In fact, 79.5% of breast biopsies do not result in a breast cancer diagnosis. After a breast biospy,a patient may move on to treatments to fight the cancer or additional testing may be prescribed to determine without a doubt that the abnormal tissue is indeed cancer.

This medical procedure is more often than not an out-patient surgery, so you are not required to do much before hand. You will want to make sure your doctor knows about all medical conditions and a complete understanding of medications, prescription and over the counter medications, that you have taken in the last few weeks. Wear comfortable clothing and have a loved one drive you home. You may be given other instructions to follow before the procedure, be sure to follow these.

The risks of a breast biospy can consist of bruising, swelling, infection at biospy site and reformed form of the breasts dependent on the extent of the biospy sample taken. If you experience severe bruising and swelling, infection at the site of the procedure or an unexpected shift in the shape of your breast, it is important to seek medical advise. A medical professional may have to remove liquid from the infected biospy site If you do have an infection the sooner it is treated, the better.

A breast biospy is has to two important components: the detection of the abnormal tissue and the extraction of a tissue sample. X-Ray, ultrasound, MRI guided and open surgery methods can be utilized to uncover the suspicious tissue. Each of these four terms gives you an image of how the detection will work.The MRI guided and ultrasound detection types have limited side effects, though the ultrasound method is more cost effective and is used when your doctor already has a good sense of where the abnormal tissue is found based on prior tests. X-rays can find abnormalities without any incisions but it does not provide the accuracy of an ultrasound or MRI and gives the patient a small dose of radiation. Open surgery is usually only used when cancer is highly suspected; often the cancerous tissue can then be removed all in one procedure.

When the irregular growth has been determined using one of the four methods, a needle is used to take out a sample. There are different types of needles. A fine aspiration biospy involves cells being taken just as if you were simply having blood drawn. A core needle is a hollow needle where a sample is drawn; this is used when a larger sample is needed. Sometimes simple suction is used and sometimes a small vacuum device is used.

Though a breast biospy analysis test may show that no cancer is present, it is important to have the area where irregular growth was discovered monitored. Have mammograms and conduct self breast exams as your doctor directs. It is possible that you are in the very early stages of cancer before testing can detect cancer. Most health care professionals push getting both a MRI and a mammogram once is year for those who have had suspicious growths in the past. The earlier you detect any new irregular growths, the better your chances are for recovering if cancer is diagnosed.
