Demonstrations were recently held to promote the new electronic hearing aids designed for the deaf. A total of four conferences were attributed to deafness and this was the last one held. The various devices range from inexpensive and easily installed units which plug into a home's electrical outlets to activate lights when the doorbell or telephone rings to a Telecommunication Device for the Deaf (TDD) which costs several hundred dollars and requires special installation.

Working as a way for the deaf to exchange written messages, the TDD incorporates a telephone and keyboard. Having access to emergency aid is important, now that TDDs are being installed in these facilities since it only functions with like machines, those with home units are better protected in the event of an emergency.

A lot of those who are deaf were born deaf and their condition caused them to lose their entire capacities for hearing. The hearing impaired are those who have some ability to hear but do not have normal acuity. It turned out that the most number of devices served to assist the hearing impaired as they made sounds louder, of those that were left the simple mechanisms like the devices meant to be connected to a telephone or doorbell suited the deaf.

When ambulances or fire engines are close by, one of the new devices will notify you. More facilities are beginning to equip their emergency vehicles with transmitters able to recognize signals 1800 feet away. Considering that emergency vehicles are in the area, the car receiver will transmit a signal causing a light on the dashboard to start flashing. Sirens may not be loud enough especially if people turn their stereos on, this device can be of great help even to someone who hears well.

For emergency vehicles, these transmitters are provided without charge in an attempt to boost sales for private vehicle receivers. People were encouraged to use the devices after the $4 rebate per receiver sold was implemented. Setting a number of emergency vehicles which needed to be equipped with these transmitters, a car maker offered to make receivers part of the design for his vehicles when this number was reached. Before he made the offer, the car maker wanted exclusive rights to the transmitter installations for a year.

When you saw the paging device, you would not know that it was not a watch. From phones to doorbells to call boxes, these are possible base stations that could activate the pager alerting the wearer through vibrations. Getting to where he is needed is simple, the wearer only needs to look at the pager and see which indicator light is on.

Several devices are available which provide improved hearing for the impaired, including headphones with a little box about the size of a deck of cards which allows the wearer to increase the volume of any sound in the room. To avoid problems with those who can hear, someone who is hearing impaired can use this device which is connected to the TV, he will be able to manipulate the volume on his TV headsets but he will be able to do so without changing the main volume levels from the TV.

There was a bookstore owner who mentioned that having customers who were either deaf or had impaired hearing influenced him to delve into the various hearing problems people are facing today. The man makes an effort to get his hands on various devices that cater to the needs of these people, he then introduces them to such products. His teaching tool to help him explain the workings of every item is a wired up board. He does not sell any of them but can give information as to where they may be obtained.

Someone who hears well may see impaired hearing as not much of a handicap. Think about how hard it would be not to hear the weather report in the morning, or not be able to notice should your car have problems in cold weather, waking up could even be the worst problem of all as no alarm clock would ever get your attention.
