With the snow, the ice and the winter winds very much in evidence, radiator cabinets seem like a very warm idea indeed - but is it really true that having radiator cabinets fitted can make any difference at all in terms of how warm your home feels?

Certainly there are many who claim that having either a radiator cabinet or a radiator cover fitted has made a dramatic improvement in the way their home feels, and you'll also hear of many people claiming that in addition to a warmer home, their fuel bill has dropped down. Perhaps like many you're a little dubious. This all sounds a little too good to be true. Surely it isn't really possible to have radiator cabinets fitted one day, and the next day enjoy the luxury of both a warmer home and lower heating bills? If this is the case, why don't we all have radiator cabinets and radiator covers fitted throughout our homes?

The truth is that many people don't have a radiator cabinet fitted simply because they are sceptical about the whole idea, and can't see how covering a radiator up could actually make a room feel warmer, and how increasing the ambient temperature of your home could possibly result in lower bills.

But no matter how odd it may sound, there is an abundance of evidence that radiator cabinets do have this effect, and sound scientific and practical explanations for it. But perhaps the simplest and easiest way of finding out for yourself is to visit the home of someone who already has a radiator cabinet fitted. One of the first things you'll probably notice is that the radiator cabinet looks considerably more attractive than the stark white metal radiator clinging to the wall.

Radiators are in virtually every room in your home, if not every room, and yet they can hardly be said to offer any aesthetic appeal. In all honesty most of us deplore the ugly sight of a metal radiator - and because we don't put furniture in front of them to hide them they can quickly become a dominating feature of the room. Radiator cabinets are available in a very wide range of styles and designs, which means that it is perfectly possible to have a custom made radiator cover created which complements the existing decor and style of your room.

From traditional to contemporary, and from white to wood effects, radiator cabinets are very attractive pieces of furniture in themselves. The two striking features are perhaps the grill at the front, and the shelf along the top. This shelf which runs along the top of the radiator cabinet prevents the heated air from rising directly upwards towards the ceiling where it cools and the benefits are lost.

But many people see the shelves as an ideal place to put ornaments and photographs. The shelf protects any items on it from the heat below, so that there's no danger of ornaments or pictures being damaged by the heat, and it gives you, in effect, a mantelpiece. The grill at the front serves a very practical purpose, but as these are also available in a wide range of styles, from classic diamond cut to ornate and contemporary patterns, these offer a very attractive look too.

The grill allows the heated air inside the cabinet to be pushed out directly into the room, so that rather than losing the majority of your heat to the ceiling above the radiator, it is directed into the room at the exact level of those sitting in the room, helping to create a warmer atmosphere very much more quickly. A gap at the bottom of the radiator cabinet allows cool air to be drawn inside, and because air is caught inside the radiator cabinet it is heated very much more quickly, and to a higher temperature.

Those who have radiator cabinets claim that they can feel the benefits of their heating almost instantly, rather than about an hour after the heating has actually come on. This also means that the heating can be switched off sooner, and the combination of warmer rooms and shorter heating periods will obviously result in lower bills.

Because every radiator and every room in your home presents unique requirements, most radiator cabinets are custom made, giving you the flexibility of choice when it comes to style and appearance, and the reassurance that your cabinet will be a perfect fit. It may seem unbelievable, but the truth is that radiator cabinets add style and elegance, and could make a big difference to both your heating and your fuel bills, meaning you'll be radiating smiles all winter!
