Buying The Best Dining Chairs For You

Chairs haven't really changed all that much over the years although styles and sizes have differed greatly. Families have loved casual furniture, then they loved formal styles that were so stuffy that many families wouldn't even use the furniture! It was a matter of show, not function.

Royal rulers of the Baroque periods loved flashy furnishings and their palace seating was no different. Even today we still love the huge overstuffed stiff backed chairs of King Louis XIV's design. Apparently his royal furniture maker did a stupendous job since many of these originals have survived over the years virtually unscathed, but no records exist to determine how comfy anyone thought they were.

Our tastes have changed many times over the past few centuries, and even over the past few decades. We have fallen head over heels for solid woods, then we changed to brocades and silks. Some of us switched our passions to cane and wicker or even leather. In any case, no matter what your personal choice, or sense of design, there is always something for everyone.

You don't need to spend a fortune for comfort, either. Sometimes plain wooden chairs even in low end prices can be super comfortable. Don't be fooled into thinking you need a padded seat to keep your own seat happy. Chairs in this price range are usually more comfortable sans padding since poorly constructed padding can be worse than none at all.

An important part of a dining chair to keep in mind when shopping is the back. Some have a purpose, most don't. Since most people don't actually lean back often while sitting, the back of their chair is usually designed for visual effects, and not much else. In more expensive chairs many backs are curved and some are even ergonomically designed to allow back support for extended periods, but since diners don't tend to actually spend much time leaning against the back of their chair, these chairs might be a bit much for most budgets without providing much of a benefit.

Also check out the chair height. Unlike years ago when chairs were all about the same seat height, there are a variety of styles now that come in different heights to accommodate counter tops, bars, high tables that resemble bar tables, and even adjustable heights. Make certain you are buying chairs that will fit under your dining surface.

The average dining set comes standard with four chairs. For larger families additional chairs are available. Also watch for designers that have complete lines of mix and match furniture and perhaps even offer multiple chair styles to match one particular table. The new look is to have two different style chairs at the same table, styles that off-set each other. Perhaps complementary colors or round back and square backs.

If your dining area needs a little face lift, you can achieve a completely new look with some new upholstery on your chairs or even a simple coat of paint and a new style chair cushion.
