Buy En Primeur only from merchants with a history of delivering

Buying wines at the ‘En primeur’ stage is now seen as the best way and certainly in today’s market of soaring wine prices the cheapest way to acquire investment grade wines for bedding down.

This is wine still in the barrel (undergoing the aging process), before being bottled and released on the open market. It is also referred to as ‘wine futures’ because the wine is bought in advance at a fixed price. It usually works out cheaper but no one knows how well the wine will mature.

En primeur tasting takes place every year in Bordeaux either at the end of March or the first week in April. The en primeur tastings for the 2009 vintage took place in March 2010. Most wines sold this way are classified growths or wines from very well known Châteaux. En primeur sales account for approximately 3-5% of the total Bordeaux wine production. Opting for en primeur wine is speculative but some see it as the only way to acquire vintage Bordeaux at affordable prices.

A drawback that has come to light over the last few years is rogue traders taking orders from unsuspecting customers with no intention of ever fulfilling the orders. Due to the fact it take 2 to 3 years for the wines to be bottled and shipped by the vineyards, customers may not realise the situation until it is too late. The companies fold before ever delivering the customers wines leaving the customer out of pocket and with first growth Bordeaux’s commanding prices of over £5,000 per case even at the en primeur stage the losses can be huge.

Frederick Achom partner at Bordeaux Wine Company based in London suggests investors only deal with established companies with a track record of delivering en primeur at least over 5 or 6 campaigns. Achom says ‘some merchants or brokers end up folding before fulfilling customer orders because they are simply managed badly, margins in wine are very small so one has to be very careful and make sure they are not dealing with newly set-up companies as they may not stand the test of time’.

It is not only the public that can be duped however, Achom has been involved in en primeur wine sales since the 1996 campaign and says ‘in the time we have been involved in en primeur campaigns we have heard some horror stories, not only from the public but from those in the trade being duped by foreign merchants claiming to have allocations of stock from the Chateaux’.

So in the clamour for the much talked about 2008 and now 2009 vintage it is not only the public that needs to keep their wits about them. The much anticipated 2009 Bordeaux vintage is expected to be released any day now and has been labelled by critics worldwide as a ‘magical vintage’ and one that will rival that of the classic of all classics, the 1982 vintage. If you can find a merchant or a broker you trust I would certainly recommend you buy as much of the first growth Bordeaux as you can get because this is a vintage your great-grandchildren will be talking about 50 years from now and those that can afford it will be still trying to get their hands on it at prices we will not be able to fathom today.

In the words of Robert Parker ‘it’s a no brainer!’
